Sustaining our important work
This year the health services research community, universities, and academic health systems are experiencing significant uncertainty regarding federal funding and other policy decisions which challenge our core values and impact our ability to sustain our important work, with some researchers facing more direct impacts than others.
On behalf of IHPI members, I am working closely with Eileen Kostanecki, IHPI’s Director of Policy Engagement & External Relations, to communicate with internal leaders and key external stakeholders, including policymakers, about the crucial importance of continued funding for health services research. As one example, we recently sent a letter to members of our Michigan congressional delegation and to Secretary of Health & Human Services Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. communicating the importance of AHRQ-funded work by IHPI researchers to improve health care value and patient safety for all Americans.
Within the Institute, IHPI’s Managing Director Trish Meyer and I have been meeting with IHPI faculty groups including our Institute Leadership Team, Early Career Faculty Advisory Council, and Center & Program Faculty Directors to discuss how we can best support our IHPI research community in light of new and evolving challenges.
To this end, I encourage all IHPI members to register to attend the Annual IHPI Member Forum on Wednesday, April 9 from 12:00−3:30 in the NCRC Dining Hall. The theme of this year’s event is “Moving Forward Together: Strategies for Sustaining Impact During Uncertain Times.” We look forward to coming together to share ideas and community-strengthening strategies, with an unwavering resolve to continue our mission to foster innovative and interdisciplinary research to inform policies and practices that improve health care and health for individuals, families, and communities. I hope to see you there!

Michigan’s work requirement for Medicaid expansion enrollees was in effect from January to March 2020 before it was halted by a federal court. This new policy brief highlights data based on surveys and interviews with enrollees and analysis of statewide employment data from 2016–2018 to understand the impact of Medicaid on enrollees’ health and employment. The bottom line: Medicaid coverage itself is associated with positive employment outcomes for enrollees, but health barriers to work remain for some.

| | Published as preprints ahead of peer review because of their timely nature, two studies led by Chad Ellimoottil, M.D., M.S., associate professor of urology, show that widespread use of telehealth has not driven up the total number of visits to diagnose or manage health conditions, and that post-visit total costs were lower for patients who started with a telehealth visit. | | | Medicare reimbursement codes for hernia procedures are often tied to disease severity and acuity, and in 2023, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services made significant changes to these coding guidelines tied to the reimbursement for anterior abdominal hernia repair. Dana Telem, M.D., M.P.H., professor of surgery, led a team of researchers to examine the association between hernia coding changes and the documented hernia size in a state of Michigan hernia data registry. | |
| | Nearly 3 out of every 4 older Americans have experienced at least one extreme weather event in the last two years, according to the U-M National Poll on Healthy Aging. And living through such an event appears to make a big difference in how they view the potential impact of climate change on their health. In all, 70% of people age 50 and older who had experienced an extreme weather event in the past two years expressed concern about climate change and their health, compared with 26% of those who had not lived through such an event. | | |
