This program provides IHPI early career faculty with an opportunity to develop relationships with potential research collaborators, mentors, and sponsors at partner institutions; hone their oral presentation skills; and bolster their CVs as they prepare for promotion.
The Institute recently welcomed Dr. Catherine M. Baase, M.D., FAAFP, FACOEM to its National Advisory Board. Dr. Baase currently serves as the Board Chairperson of the Michigan Health Improvement Alliance (MIHIA), a multi-stakeholder collaborative dedicated to improving the health of people in fourteen counties in central Michigan through the transformational initiative THRIVE (Transforming Health Regionally in a Vibrant Economy).

IHPI Policy Brief: Pulse oximeters are less accurate in hospitalized Black patients
A new IHPI policy brief summarizes the work of a team of members led by Michael Sjoding, M.D., M.Sc., associate professor of internal medicine, to test the accuracy of pulse oximeter devices in Black people compared to white people.

The team first published its findings suggesting the devices are less accurate at measuring the blood oxygen levels of Black patients in late 2020, in the New England Journal of Medicine
Lindsay Admon, M.D., M.Sc., Michelle Moniz, M.D., M.Sc., Alex Peahl, M.D., M.Sc., and Kara Zivin, Ph.D., M.S., M.A., M.F.A., are women's health experts focusing on research across the lifespan. In this series of videos, they discuss insurance coverage, perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, redesigning maternal care, and out-of-pocket costs.
There are 800,000 myocardial infarctions in the United States annually, and those with periodontal disease are at increased risk for hospitalization after a heart attack. A study co-authored by Romesh Nalliah, D.D.S., M.H.C.M., clinical professor of dentistry, found that patients who had heart attacks and received periodontal care had the shortest length of stay in the hospital, and more follow-up visits. The findings add weight to an understanding of the association between oral health and overall health.
New results from the University of Michigan National Poll on Healthy Aging show that 70% of people over 50 experience joint pain at least occasionally, and 60% have been told they have some form of arthritis. Nearly half of those with arthritis symptoms said they have pain every day, and about half of those say the pain limits their usual activities.

Food insecurity experts: Focusing on intersections between food and health
Millions of Americans are afflicted with food insecurity and diet-related diseases including heart disease, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. IHPI experts are providing timely research to help inform U.S. nutrition and physical activity policies:
A new study shows that depressive symptoms among older adults caring for partners with dementia can emerge up to 10 years before a routine screening detects the first signs of their partner’s cognitive impairment. Geoffrey Hoffman, Ph.D., M.P.H., assistant professor of nursing, was the study's senior investigator.
According to a new University of Michigan study led by Nora Becker, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of internal medicine, the risk of serious financial problems for adults rises directly with the number of chronic health conditions they have. After reviewing nearly 3 million privately insured individuals, the research team found that the more of these conditions someone had, the higher their odds of being late on credit payments, having poor credit scores, having a collection agency get involved in debts from unpaid medical or other bills, or going through bankruptcy.
