September 2023
Since the early 1990s, U-M has been a key destination for health services researchers interested in developing and sharing health and healthcare solutions through the Clinician Scholars Program.

“People come here from across the country solely for this training – because there’s no other place like it,' says Rodney Hayward, M.D., professor of internal medicine, who just stepped down as director of the program. Hayward led the program within IHPI since 2017, and for a decade before that, he led the predecessor program that was funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. He has passed the director's baton to Tammy Chang, M.D., M.P.H., M.S., associate professor of family medicine, who herself graduated from the RWJF-funded program.

A new report from U-M public health researchers studying how COVID-19 affected Michiganders found that the severity of illness or negative impact of the pandemic is strongly linked to where one lives. The findings show that Detroit had the highest proportion of adults with severe disease, while the southwest region of the state had the highest proportion of adults with long COVID.

The report is the latest in a series from the Michigan COVID-19 Recovery Surveillance Study, which breaks down the effects of the pandemic on Michigan residents’ health, work, finances, personal life, and more.
