Improving sepsis care around the world

Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that requires rapid, multidisciplinary coordination for effective treatment and management. Hallie Prescott, M.D., M.Sc., associate professor of internal medicine, is advancing efforts to improve sepsis care. Through impactful research and engagement with key stakeholders, her work is helping to inform clinical guidelines and policies that strengthen sepsis response worldwide.

Wait times for emergency hospitalization keep getting higher

A new Health Affairs study led by Alexander Janke, M.D., MHS, M.Sc., clinical assistant professor of emergency medicine, finds hospital “boarding” of patients in emergency departments has surged nationwide since mid-2020, with over 25% waiting over four hours for a bed and nearly 5% waiting over 24 hours, based on 46 million visits from 1,500 hospitals between 2017 and 2024.

Dementia’s broad reach: More than 1 in 4 families of older adults at risk for providing care

A new NIH-funded study led by Esther Friedman, Ph.D., research associate professor at the U-M Institute for Social Research, finds that about 26% of both households and immediate families of older adults include an individual with dementia—often requiring relatives to step into unexpected caregiving roles. This figure rises to 37% among extended families of adults 65 and older.

New findings from the U-M National Poll on Healthy Aging report that no matter what their level of experience with AI, nearly all people over 50 (92%) say they want to know when the information they read, see, or hear is AI-generated. Just over half (55%) of older adults have ever used an AI technology to speak or type messages on an electronic device.
