The number of cases of COVID-19 diagnosed in the U.S. has begun to rise after the curve was twice "flattened" by efforts to prevent the spread. A new study published in Health Affairs and led by Kao-Ping Chua, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of pediatrics, looked at private insurer payments and out-of-pocket spending on 526 orphan drugs. Mean annual out-of-pocket spending for orphan drugs rose from $486 to $866 and was higher for children than adults.
