U-M research and outreach inform FDA action aimed at protecting cancer patients

A common cancer treatment can be toxic or fatal for patients who carry variants of a specific gene. Now, to improve safety, all patients are recommended to undergo genetic testing before taking the drug, thanks in part to research and efforts to share evidence with decisionmakers led by Daniel Hertz, Pharm.D., Ph.D., associate professor of clinical pharmacy.

Medicaid billed for 52% of U.S. hospital costs from firearm injuries

The initial hospital treatment of firearm injuries cost the U.S. health care system an estimated $7.7 billion between 2016 and 2021, with the largest burden falling on urban trauma center hospitals that serve the highest proportion of Medicaid patients, according to a new study led by Regina Royan, M.D., M.P.H., assistant professor of emergency medicine.

Experiences of disability after 50: 
Poll looks at self-identity and help with health care visits

New findings from the National Poll on Healthy Aging show that—even when they have conditions covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act —many older adults do not view themselves as having a disability or identify as a person with a disability. The poll also finds that most do not request assistance or accommodations when they get health care.
