Ontario’s Office of the Chief Coroner releases second annual Construction Death Review report
The Office of the Chief Coroner has released the second annual Construction Death Review (CDR) report. The report covers the findings of the review, which looked at 44 workers whose deaths involved circumstances not related to working at heights. The fatalities largely occurred between 2015 and 2023, and involved factors including heavy material and equipment hazards, trench collapses, and electrical exposure.
The review identified key health and safety concerns, including worker experience levels and the use (or lack thereof) of manufacturer instructions for operating vehicles, machinery, and equipment. Based on its findings, the CDR issued 14 recommendations to strengthen construction health and safety across Ontario.

Week of Action
Join CAPSA's National Substance Use Health Week of Action from September 7 to 11, 2026. This annual campaign promotes awareness, education, and equitable access to substance use health supports across Canada.
Organizations are invited to participate using CAPSA's communications toolkit, which includes ready-to-use social media content, promotional materials, and daily action themes designed to encourage engagement and conversation.
CAPSA is also inviting individuals and organizations to submit a short video sharing their perspectives on substance use health, equity, and the importance of supporting people who use substances.

Slow Down, Move Over: New CAA campaign launches
CAA has launched a new public awareness campaign to reinforce Ontario's Slow Down, Move Over (SDMO) law and highlight the risks that roadside workers face.
Recent CAA research found that while more than 90 per cent of Ontario drivers report complying with SDMO requirements for emergency vehicles, only 49 per cent say they do so for tow trucks. The findings underscore the need for greater awareness of the law and the importance of protecting all roadside workers.
The campaign features a powerful public service announcement showing how quickly a routine roadside assistance call can turn tragic when drivers fail to slow down and move over. CAA is also advancing advocacy efforts, including a pilot project to equip select tow trucks with Variable Message Signs to encourage safer driver behaviour.

Ontario implements administrative penalties for road safety violations
Ontario has finalized and implemented the Regulation for Administrative Penalties - Road Safety (O. Reg. 182/26), which came into force on July 1, 2026. The regulation establishes a framework that allows the Ministry of Transportation to issue administrative monetary penalties for specified violations under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) rather than relying solely on court-based enforcement.
The regulation includes the following key features:
- Administrative penalties may be issued for a range of prescribed offences under the HTA and related regulations, including requirements related to commercial motor vehicle operators, hours of service, driving schools, and vehicle inspection centres.
- Penalties may also be applied to carriers that receive a conditional or unsatisfactory safety rating.
- The regulation establishes a formal process for issuing penalty orders, appealing decisions, and reviewing penalties through designated hearing officers.
- The new system is intended to provide a more efficient enforcement tool, promote compliance, and address non-compliance more quickly than traditional court proceedings.
For commercial vehicle operators, carriers, driving schools, and vehicle inspection centres, the regulation represents a significant shift in how certain transportation-related violations may be enforced in Ontario.

Gordie Howe International Bridge opens
The Gordie Howe International Bridge officially opened on Monday, July 27, 2026, providing a new crossing between Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan. The bridge is expected to improve the movement of goods and people through one of North America's busiest trade corridors while strengthening cross-border supply chains and economic growth.
Featuring direct highway-to-highway connections and modern border facilities, the new crossing will enhance efficiency for commercial and passenger traffic travelling between Canada and the United States.

New interprovincial trucking MOU aims to improve harmonization across Canada
Federal, provincial, and territorial transportation ministers have signed a new memorandum of understanding (MOU) on interprovincial trucking. It introduces measures to improve consistency, reduce barriers, and support the efficient movement of goods across Canada.
The MOU includes the following commitments:
- Harmonize key trucking regulations and safety standards across jurisdictions
- Complete implementation of Mandatory Entry-Level Training for commercial drivers nationwide
- Align requirements for long combination vehicles and oversized/overweight loads
- Establish common standards for signage, lighting, escort vehicles, and construction zone clearances
- Improve permit processes and expand access to regulatory information through the Canadian Trucking Regulations Hub
The agreement is intended to enhance safety, support labour mobility, improve supply chain efficiency, and reduce regulatory differences that can affect carriers operating across provincial and territorial boundaries.

Quebec updates heavy vehicle licensing requirements
Effective Thursday, July 9, 2026, Quebec introduced new licensing requirements for Ontario residents moving to the province and seeking to exchange their Class 1 heavy vehicle licence. Drivers with less than 24 months of Class 1 experience will now be required to pass practical driving tests before receiving a Quebec licence.
The new measure, introduced by the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ), is aimed at enhancing road safety and ensuring drivers have the skills and experience needed to safely operate heavy vehicles.
