Health and safety basics for new and young workers

IHSA's latest guide, Health and Safety Basics for New and Young Workers (W056), is designed to help new entrants to the workforce understand their rights, responsibilities, and the importance of safety from day one.

The guide provides an overview of several key topics:

  • Ontario's Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Key worker rights: the right to know, participate, and refuse unsafe work
  • Employer and worker responsibilities
  • Training requirements and resources
  • Tips for workplace orientation and hazard awareness

Preventing complacency on the job

There is a common, but hard to detect, factor in many worker injuries and fatalities: complacency. In health and safety, complacency is a mindset that develops when someone underestimates the hazards on a jobsite and the risk of an incident. It leads to them being less aware of their surroundings and less vigilant about following health and safety policies and procedures.

IHSA has created several resources to help employers and employees combat complacency on the job:

Truck driver sentenced to 10 years in crash that killed four people

Jagmeet Grewal, the truck driver who killed four people and injured four others on August 5, 2019, in a massive pileup on Highway 440 in Laval, was sentenced to ten years in prison.

Judge Yanick Laramée wanted to send a strong message to both society in general and truck drivers in particular. She also emphasized the man’s disregard for human life, whose guilt on a charge of criminal negligence was established in February 2024 at the Laval courthouse.
