Message from the Chapter Board
By Susan Futey, CBAP, VP Membership snowman_snowy_dec.jpg
Happy New Year to you! Here is the conclusion of the IIBA Self-Assessment Tool article that started in last month's newsletter. Were you able to make time to check out this tool and get a head start on the new year? If yes, great! If no, then now is the time!
IIBA members
Login to your IIBA member account, at, and you will find a new format for the international website. Select the 'Professional Development' menu item then the option, 'Develop Your Skills'. Scroll down the page until you see 'Self-Assessment Tool'. From this page, you may download a PDF of the tool or take the assessment online.
Keeping score
Each of 30 questions is scored on a 5-point minimum proficiency level rating scale.
5 - Strategist (thought leader; developer of innovative solutions)
4 - Expert (mentor to other BAs, sought after for expertise)
3 - Skilled Practitioner (completes well-scoped tasks independently)
2 - Practical Knowledge (entry-level BA, fundamental awareness of skills)
1 - General Knowledge
Score yourself based on your level of knowledge and competencies relative to A Guide to the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge® (BABOK® Guide) version 3.
Creating a plan
Use the 'Career Action Guide', a Members-only link accessed from 'Develop Your Skills' option, to create your career action plan according to what you determined as your score for each knowledge area. IIBA suggests that you gain feedback on your plan, and have the support of your Mentor or Manager, before acting on any steps in your plan.
Taking action
Launch into 2019 with the intention to improve your professional skills. Here are a few suggested actions:
  • Attend professional development webinars.
  • Join a professional chapter network visit for more information.
  • Get mentored.

Volunteer of the Month
By Linda Meserve, CSPO, CSM, ECBA, President
Please join me in congratulating Debbie Rasor and Barbara Griffith as our Volunteers of the Month!  These two talented women are the guiding force behind the chapter's monthly newsletter and special announcements.
Ongoing communication is a hallmark for any effective organization, and IIBA Denver is no different in this respect.  Keeping in touch regularly is a must for us, and Debbie and Barb lead the way.  As our editors, they provide the strategy and layout for the newsletter.  They also make sure all contributors are aware of their assignments each month.  Their role requires consistency and followup, and without these two women, the chapter could not maintain constant contact with the local community of business analysis professionals.
Great job, Barb and Debbie!  Thank you for all you do!
December Meeting Recap
By Linda Meserve, President
About a dozen folks (all professional levels) joined us for our December meeting in Westminster, and we had a great discussion.  Our presenter, Linda Meserve, gave a brief talk entitled "The Future is Now and Now Is Digital".  Based on an IIBA Thought Leadership white paper, Linda's presentation reviewed a set of questions showing how business analysis skills readily address some of the challenges faced during a digital transformation.  Then the group went through a joint exercise applying the questions to two specific scenarios.  A lively discussion with full participation ensued.
We would like to thank TEKsystems for hosting us in their Westminster offices.  We appreciate your generous support for the local business analyst professional community!
Membership Registry Update
by Barbara Griffith

With all the changes on the IIBA website, the membership registry is in a state of transition. We will resume reporting new Colorado members as soon as possible.
BABOK article volunteer needed
by Debbie Rasor

We would like to thank Grant Warden for his hard work in writing quarterly BABOK articles in 2018! He has decided to step down from this role, and we need a replacement volunteer.  This role involves reviewing three BABOK sections and writing a summary once a quarter. There are two other volunteers in this area who write for the other months. The articles are published in the newsletter and on the chapter website. Contact me for more information.
