Services and Tools for COVID-19 Drug Development
I IVS provides robust test systems and assays to detect the adverse effects of diverse materials, including pharmaceuticals targeting COVID-19. The IIVS Respiratory Toxicology Program offers testing services using cutting edge 3D pulmonary models - in addition to human 2D primary cells and lines - such as reconstructed human airways and human precision-cut human lung slices (hPCLS) that contain multiple cell types including immune competent macrophages. These systems, combined with our advanced exposure techniques, allow the detection of acute toxic responses such as oxidative stress, cytotoxicity, and inflammation (among others), as well as long term chronic exposure responses not possible using other models.

Let IIVS help you determine the safety of your therapeutics throughout your development program. Visit our website or contact Brent Gilbert to learn more!

hPCLS offer native architecture of small airways and respiratory parenchyma and contain immune competent macrophages and dendritic cells. Often considered the most relevant model of the human lung, hPCLS are utilized for acute and chronic tissue response evaluations following single or repeat exposures.
Summer School on Innovative Approaches in Science
Now a Virtual Event scheduled for June 22-28 - Registration is Free!!

Join other students and early-career scientists this summer at the first North American Summer School on Innovative Approaches in Science . The program will feature lectures, in-depth training, virtual laboratory tours, e-poster presentations, and virtual engagement with speakers and attendees. The program is focused on presenting cutting-edge methods to reduce and replace animal tests in toxicology and biomedical science.

The event builds on two past summer schools held at the European Commission Joint Research Center in Ispra, Italy, and features expert speakers from Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University, the National Institutes of Health, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, and more.

You can choose to apply to the Summer School to participate in the full program including panels, lab tours and demos, networking, and mentoring sessions, by  submitting a short application . Attendees who participate in the full Summer School are eligible for poster and participation awards and will receive a certificate for their involvement. Or, you can register to participate in one or more training or lecture sessions. Registration for individual sessions is available on the  program page .
Webinar Reminder:

Use of Non-animal Skin Sensitization Test Methods
27 May 2020, 10:00am – 11:30am EDT

Co-organized by the PETA International Science Consortium, the US Environmental Protection Agency, and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, the next webinar in the series will focus on:

Speakers include:

  • Louis “Gino” Scarano, PhD, US Environmental Protection Agency Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics (OPPT)

  • Hans Raabe, MS, Institute for In Vitro Sciences, Inc (IIVS)

The US EPA Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics will present an update on their review of non-animal skin sensitization tests received since the release of the 2018 OCSPP draft interim science policy on the use of alternative approaches for skin sensitization.

Hans Raabe will discuss the use of non-animal skin sensitization test methods for US EPA classification. Mr. Raabe will provide an overview of the three currently accepted regulatory test methods (OECD test guidelines 442C, 442D, and 442E) and two Defined Approaches (the AOP “2 out of 3” approach and the KE3/1 sequential testing strategy) accepted by the EPA. He will also discuss standard approaches for chemical ingredient testing as well as assessment of more difficult-to-test mixtures. Emerging methods, such as the SENS-IS test, will also be covered.
