Letter From the President

By Alex Young, CECS, Canadian Chapter President

Hello to our Canadian Members,

I hope everyone had a great summer; I know after our last winter we needed the break. Unfortunately, it looks like they are forecasting another Great Canadian Winter.

I want to put out a "Call to Action" to all our Canadian members to make an effort to attend this years' Fall Technical Seminar & Expo, November 5-8, 2014 in Columbus, OH.  I am planning to attend, and to bring a couple of technicians, as we are really excited with this year's content and "Tools of the Trade" theme.  As you know, IKECA is a not-for-profit organization and largely run by volunteers.  There are many committees that would love to have your help to promote all aspects of both IKECA and our industry. We require more participation from our Canadian Members, and remember joining a community is a great way to support and grow our constituency.  The time commitment and effort is minimal, and networking opportunities immense, valuable CEU's are gained, and you can't help but gain knowledge from your fellow committee members.

The IKECA brand is gaining recognition amongst our Canadian AHJ's, and last year we had a record number of Canadian AHJ's enrolled.  There have been some great gains through new strategic partnerships, such as The Compliance Engine, and our ANSI/IKECA C-1O Standard.  Now more than ever before, your membership brings recognition and respect to our industry.  However, we Canadians need to get involved and do our part to grow the membership and contribute to our IKECA brand.  Step out of your comfort zone and get involved.

If I can be of any help, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Alex Young, CECS

New PECT Exam is Now Available!

The Certification Committee has reviewed the PECT Exam to revise questions and decrease the length of the exam. The PECT Exam now contains 72 multiple choice questions (20 questions less than the previous exam).

The content of the exam will continue to reflect NFPA 96 and general industry knowledge. The exam will not change in price and will continue to be exclusively offered to members, specifically to those as a stepping stone towards certification.

The IKECA Standards Development Committee Consensus Body Announces Two Initiatives for Public Input

First, IKECA has entered into an agreement with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). As such, the inspection standard draft has been re-titled to the following: I10: Standard for the Methodology for Inspection of Commercial Kitchen Exhaust Systems, along with some modifications to the draft. The public review period was announced in the August 8, 2014 edition of ANSI's Standards Action. Request a copy of the draft via e-mail. If you have any comments or suggestions, please submit a formal proposal with your substantiation via the Document Proposal Form. The closing date for proposals is October 7, 2014 by 5:00 p.m. ET.

Also, this is a reminder that IKECA is accepting proposals for revisions to ANSI/IKECA C10: Standard for Cleaning of Commercial Kitchen Exhaust Systems, 2011 Edition as the standard is on a five-year revision cycle. The closing date for proposals is December 15, 2014. Please submit proposals with substantiation via the Document Proposal Form. View the current revision cycle schedule in order to have an ANSI-approved revision by late 2016.
