IL State Report Card: D220 performs better than 90% of IL school districts in Math and English |

At the Nov. 15 Barrington 220 Board of Education meeting, the Board heard an update from the Department of Teaching and Learning about Barrington 220's annual report card, which is assembled by the Illinois State Board of Education. The report card includes metrics related to achievement, growth, indicators of college and career readiness, as well as school climate and culture. While Barrington 220 state testing scores are down compared to 2018-19, the current data shows that Barrington 220 is rebounding from the pandemic, and learning recovery and learning acceleration are evident. In fact, Barrington students scored higher than at least 90% of students across the state in Mathematics and English Language Arts. Board approves School Resource Officer for middle school campuses |

At the Nov. 15 Board meeting, the Board approved the hiring of a Barrington Police Officer to serve as a School Resource Officer at Station Campus and Prairie Campus. This will be a shared position between the two middle schools, which will enhance safety measures at both campuses. This is part of the district's ongoing efforts to improve safety and security, as well as to create environments where students feel supported socially and emotionally. Currently, the district has one School Resource Officer from the Barrington Police Department who is stationed at Barrington High School. The district is working collaboratively with the Barrington Police Department to hire a third School Resource Officer, so that there would be one at each middle school. |

Board approves estimated 2022 tax levy |
|
At the Nov. 15 Board meeting, the Board heard a presentation about the tentative 2022 tax levy, which is the first step in the process to establish a final levy of property taxes to support the district in 2023. Barrington 220 collects property taxes from Kane, Lake, Cook and McHenry Counties, and property taxes account for approximately 81% of the district's annual operating revenues. If approved, the district expects to receive a 5.6% tax increase compared to last year, however it is requesting a 6.6% increase in the event new construction is larger than expected. Based upon projections, excluding bond and interest, the total expected tax revenue to be collected in 2023 is $140,318,584. The next step in the tax levy approval process is a public hearing set for the Dec. 6 Board meeting. The Board is anticipated to approve the final tax levy on Dec. 20.
At the meeting, the Board also agreed to not issue Debt Service Extension Base (DSEB) this year, due to the high level of inflation impacting taxpayers. This decision will save local taxpayers approximately $2.4 million. Click here to listen to the full discussion.

Board approves 2022 IASB resolutions |

At the Nov. 15 Board meeting, the Board approved which resolutions it plans to support from the Illinois Association of School Board's (IASB) 2022 resolution proposals. Every November school boards from across the state send a delegate to the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB) conference in Chicago. At this conference, the delegates vote on proposed resolutions IASB will pursue in the upcoming legislative sessions. Board Member Steve Wang will serve as Barrington 220's IASB delegate.This year’s conference will take place Nov. 17-20. The Board will NOT support resolutions 2 and 3. Dr. Hunt recognizes National Merit Commended students |
|
During his Superintendent's Report at the Nov. 15 Board meeting, Dr. Hunt recognized 32 BHS students who have been named 2023 National Merit Commended students. These students received a letter of commendation based on their scores on the PSAT test taken their junior year. Commended students are among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.5 million students from across the country who took the test.

BHS final exams in December |

At the Nov. 15 Board meeting, BHS Principal Steve McWilliams shared information about the upcoming final exams at BHS. Final exams are scheduled from Dec.19 - Dec. 22. The schedule will be similar to the spring semester (three final exam periods on days one and two, with two final exam periods and a make-up period on day three). Four days have been scheduled to accommodate potential winter weather issues. The exact schedule for final exams will be confirmed on December 15. Most classes will have a concluding experience to end the semester such as portfolios, projects, end of unit exams, traditional final exams, AP practice exams, or performance assessments, except for physical education classes. By Nov. 28 teachers will have communicated the course specifics to students. |

Rose student selected as Star-Spangled Student |

At the Nov. 15 Board meeting, Barbara B. Rose Elementary student Manyata Singh led meeting attendees in reciting the pledge of allegiance. This is part of an initiative at Board meetings called the "Star-Spangled Student" which recognizes exemplary students. Manyata is a 5th grade student who is kind to others, positive, and very friendly. She is a dedicated band member at Rose and is a leader in the classroom who helps guide discussions in her book groups. Congrats Manyata! |

During his Superintendent's Report at the Nov. 15 Board meeting, Dr. Hunt recognized the Barrington 220 Board of Education members for their volunteer service and dedication to the school district. The Illinois Association of School Boards has designated November 15 of each year as "School Board Members Day" in Illinois. The day recognizes the outstanding efforts of the nearly 6,000 elected school board members throughout the state.

3 Board of Education seats up for election on April 2023 ballot |

There will be three school Board seats up for election on the April 4, 2023 ballot. School Board members serve a four year term. If you're interested in running for a Board seat, former Barrington 220 Board members will be holding a Q&A session on Monday, Nov. 21 at 6:30pm in Conference Room B at the Barrington Area Library.
