US airlines say new rights for disabled passengers are “overreach”

A major airline trade organization is urging the Trump administration to put an end to a federal review that could require airlines to compensate passengers in cash for lengthy flight delays.

According to Business InsiderAirlines for America (A4A), which represents 10 carriers—including such industry giants as DeltaAmerican and United—sent a letter to the Department of Transportation (DOT) on Monday calling for the review to be dropped.


The new rules made airlines accountable for returning wheelchairs to customers without delay and in the same condition they found them in, meaning the carriers were presumed responsible for any damage caused to wheelchairs while in their possession.

Court Approves Spirit Airlines’

Reorganization Plan



Spirit Airlines, Inc. received court approval for a $795 million funded debt equitizing plan on February 20, which the company expects to alleviate its Chapter 11 bankruptcy

After struggling to recover following the pandemic and a failed merger with JetBlue that was blocked by the federal government citing anti-competitive concerns, Spirit became the first to declare Chapter 11 bankruptcy since American Airlines in 2011. 


It reported around $3.3 billion in debt and laid off several hundred pilots in a money-saving effort. While it’s been trimming pilots and unpopular routes, the airline’s day-to-day operations have not changed.

The 2025 Day on the Hill event will taking place on April 28-29, 2025 in Washington, D.C. Educational sessions will take place on Monday, April 28th with the Hill visits on Tuesday, April 29th.


Each year, NLA members head to Washington D.C. to meet with their elected representatives in efforts to educate them on the current issues and concerns facing our industry.
