CTA launches camera pilot to enforce violations in bike, bus lanes

Source: WGN News

CHICAGO — Six CTA buses are now operating with automated cameras designed to enforce parking and standing violations in bike and bus lanes, the agency announced Wednesday.

The cameras, called Automated Bus Lane Enforcement (ABLE) systems, are part of a pilot program launched last year. In 2024, the camera were put on city vehicles and now move to six buses.

The pilot authorizes Chicago to ticket registered vehicle owners for specific parking violations and includes, but is not limited to, bus and bike lane violations within the designated pilot area downtown.

The pilot area is bounded by Lake Michigan, North Avenue, Ashland Avenue and Roosevelt Road.

CVSA Releases 2025 International Roadcheck Results

Commercial motor vehicle enforcement personnel in Canada, Mexico and the U.S. conducted 56,178 commercial motor vehicle, driver and cargo inspections on May 13-15 as part of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) 72-hour International Roadcheck inspection, enforcement and data-gathering initiative. Most of the vehicles (81.6%) and drivers (94.1%) inspected did not have any out-of-service (OOS) violations.

Conversely, inspectors discovered 13,553 vehicle, 3,317 driver and 177 hazardous materials/dangerous goods (HM/DG) out-of-service violations, and placed 10,148 commercial motor vehicles and 3,342 drivers out of service. The vehicle out-of-service rate was 18.1% and the driver out-of-service rate was 5.9%. Meaning, those drivers and/or vehicles were restricted from further travel until all out-of-service violations were resolved.

When travel isn’t first: How economic strains are changing consumer behavior

Phocuswright Research

Behind steady travel rates, a quiet shift is underway: consumers are spending more cautiously and rethinking what matters most. Shifting priorities signal the start of a new spending reality. According to Phocuswright’s latest travel research report U.S. Consumer Travel Report 2025, average annual spend has declined, while the number of trips remains unchanged. In the new data, travelers indicated they would consider road trips in lieu of air travel should airfare become too expensive, or not travel at all to spend on other goods and services.
