Kennedy rehabilitation update: Week 24


CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that the rehabilitation of the Kennedy Expressway (Interstate 90/94) from the Edens Expressway (I-94) junction to Ohio Street continued to progress the week of August 25. 

The outbound lanes from north of Pulaski Road to the Edens junction reopened last week. The repairs in the section between Addison Street and Pulaski Road continues, with that section reopening after Labor Day. ​ 

With the reopening of the north end of the project, 70% of the work scheduled for this construction season will be complete. ​ 

As a reminder, to accommodate ongoing bridge rehabilitation and ramp repairs, the following ramps are scheduled to close, starting at 9 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 2: ​ 

  • Kimball Avenue ramp to outbound Kennedy, anticipated to reopen in approximately three weeks. ​ 
  • Outbound Kennedy to Addison Street, anticipated to reopen in approximately three weeks. 

Current ramp closures

  • Outbound Kennedy to Augusta Boulevard/Milwaukee Avenue, anticipated to reopen mid-October. ​ ​ ​ 
  • North Avenue (Illinois 64) to outbound Kennedy, anticipated to reopen early September. ​ ​ 
  • Outbound Kennedy to Armitage Avenue, anticipated to reopen early September. ​ ​ ​ ​Fullerton Avenue ramp to outbound Kennedy and the slip ramp portion to Western Avenue, anticipated to reopen mid-September ​ 
  • Outbound Kennedy to Kimball Avenue, anticipated to reopen Sept. 3. ​ ​ ​ ​ 
  • Addison Street to outbound Kennedy, anticipated to reopen Sept. 3. 
  • Outbound Kennedy to Pulaski Road/Irving Park Road (Illinois 19), anticipated to reopen Sept. 3. 
  • Outbound Kennedy to Diversey Avenue, anticipated to reopen in mid-September. 


​ ​​ ​ ​ The reversible express lanes will remain open in the outbound direction, with two mainline outbound lanes closed at a time. The reversible mid-gate entrance and exits will remain closed. ​ ​​ ​ ​

Spirit Airlines files for bankruptcy again but vows to keep flying



Budget carrier Spirit Airlines said Friday that it has filed for fresh bankruptcy protection months after emerging from a Chapter 11 reorganization.

The ultra low-cost airline said it plans to keep flying as usual during the restructuring process, meaning passengers can still book trips and use their tickets, credits and loyalty points. Employees and contractors will also continue to get paid, the company said.

CEO Dave Davis said the airline’s previous Chapter 11 petition focused on reducing debt and raising capital, and since exiting that process in March, “it has become clear that there is much more work to be done and many more tools are available to best position Spirit for the future.”

Biotech CEO sues Uber after illegal immigrant driver assault caught on camera in downtown Charleston, SC

A biotech CEO is taking Uber to court after an illegal immigrant driver was caught on camera violently assaulting him in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, sending his dog crashing to the pavement.

The lawsuit, filed Monday in Charleston County, alleges TC BioPharm CEO Bryan Kobel, 45, suffered a concussion in April after Uber driver and illegal Russian national Vadim Nikolaevich Uliumdzhiev, 42, attacked him in a King Street restaurant parking lot.

New Data Highlights Current State of the US Hotel Industry



The U.S. hotel industry was once again in the negative this past July compared to last year, according to information and analytics provider CoStar.

According to the data, which is aggregated from over 90,000 properties across the globe, occupancy, the average daily rate for a room and the revenue per available room (also known as RevPAR), were all down in July compared to July 2024. 


Occupancy was at 68.2 percent, a one percent decrease; the average daily rate was at $161.90, a decrease of 0.1 percent; and the average revenue per available room was $110.37, a decrease of 1.1 percent. 



New York City was the destination with the highest occupancy level, but it was 1.1 percent lower than it was last July.
