Manual On or Vacancy Sensor Lighting Control
Each month, our Lighting Controls Department Manager, Clint Conley, offers insight and advice about lighting controls. Clint, a licensed professional electrical engineer, brings over 15 years of construction, engineering, and lighting controls experience to the table. He takes the often confusing topic of lighting controls, and presents information in a straightforward and concise manner.

This month, Clint shares an article that discusses five ways to ensure a successful installation of occupancy sensors.

Here's what Clint has to say about this month's article...

For this month, I would like to cover appropriate occupancy sensor selection to match the application in question. There are three main types of occupancy sensors in the market - Passive Infrared, Ultrasonic, and Dual Technology which utilizes both of the other two technologies. Appropriate sensor selection involves not only selecting the correct sensor, but also selecting the correct range, placing the sensor appropriately, and following with the correct sensor adjustments. Rather than cover this entire topic here, I would like to reference an article that I have been using as a guideline for many years. This article was written in 2007, but is still relevant today. The only change is that, per the IECC 2015, lighting controls are required in all commercial buildings...there is no longer an exception for buildings smaller than 5,000 square feet.

There are also dimming sensors available on the market today that can be configured to be automatic on to 50% light level only. This meets the IECC requirements for automatic and manual on control. For more information on this topic, please refer to last month's article on manual on requirements and sensor selection.
The MH Companies is Proud to Be a Part of Design Build BLUFF!
Design Build BLUFF The MH Companies is pleased to have played an integral role in the Design Build BLUFF Mexican Water Cabin project. We worked closely with the students in the CU College of Architecture and Planning Design Build program to assist with the lighting design. And, since the program relies almost entirely on donations of building supplies, we reached out to our manufacturers for product donations. ConTechBEGAPrimus, and Barron came through with donations of energy-efficient LED products. Through our involvement with the Design Build BLUFF program, we were able to give the students a practical working knowledge and deeper understanding of how lighting design and product specification plays an integral role in the success of a project.
