ILSA Launches Interpretation and Translation Assistance Program (ITAP)
The International Law Students Association (ILSA) has launched a student program called Interpretation and Translation Assistance Program (ITAP). ITAP works with Legal Aid of Broward County to assist their attorneys in translating and interpreting political asylum interviews for indigent families. All NSU Law students are encouraged to join, but participants must be fluent in both Spanish and English. Pro Bono hours are available. Student Visits DC for Rare Disease Week and Works with Members of the House
Candace Lerman visited Washington, D.C. for Rare Disease Week from February 29- March 3. Throughout her visit, Candace was able to tour the National Institutes for Health (NIH), and meet with Congress on legislation for funding NIH and reforming the drug approval process. During last year's Rare Disease Week, Candace was able to work with members of the House on a provision called the OPEN Act. This year, Candace worked with the Senate on a similar bill which will allow rare disease patients to use FDA approved drugs off-label. Students Compete in Transactional Law Meet for 5th Year

Nikolaos Zervos (3L) represented NSU Law at the 2016 Transactional LawMeet on Friday, February 26th in Athens, Georgia for the Southeast Regional Rounds. Ledell Williams, Jr. (2L) attended as our alternate. This is the fifth year the law school has participated in this meet. The team was coached by Professor Donna Litman.

Third Annual Mark Dobson 1L Tournament
Saturday, March 19 - Sunday, March 20, 2016
This tournament offers first year law students the opportunity to experience a mock trial closing argument. Nova Trial Association (NTA) provides students a case file that lays the foundation for their closing arguments. During this two-day tournament, first year law students compete with each other to advance through the event and experience a mock trial competition. Those who advance may be invited to join NTA and compete with other law schools.

NSU Law in partnership with The Recording Academy Florida Chapter hosted, "On the Record: Artists and Advocacy in the Legislative Arena " at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on Thursday, March 3, 2016. The event brought together a diverse panel comprised of
Todd Dupler, an attorney and Director of Government Relations for The Recording Academy in Washington D.C.; Joel Richard, Legislative Counsel for Congressman Ted Deutch; and Dan Warner, GRAMMY, Latin GRAMMY, and Emmy winning producer and guitarist. The informal discussion centered on artists' rights currently under legislative development.

42 Public Service Organizations Tabled at NSU Law's Public Interest Law Day
This year, 42 federal, state, and local public service organizations attended NSU Law's Public Interest Law Day on Thursday, February 18 at NSU Law. Attending Public Interest Law Day is a great way for students to learn more about the organizations and about the different pro bono, internship, clinical, fellowship, and employment opportunities available. Over 70 NSU Alumni represented various organizations at the event. Thanks to all the NSU Law Alumni who participated.

Write-Right Workshop Helps 1L Students Present Themselves for Public Service Summer Opportunities
Professor Olympia Duhart
, Legal Research and Writing program director, along with Associate Professors Heather Baxter, Jane Cross, Camille Lamar, and Joseph Hnylka presented the LRW Student Outreach Event, "Write Right: Strategies for Summer Success and Service," in partnership with Assistant Dean Robert Levine and Public Interest Law Program director, Jennifer Gordon. The presentation was aimed at 1L students and included a panel discussion by Valerie Barnhart (JD 2010) and Vanessa Coe (JD 2011), both of whom are law firm partners. Also participating was Khalil H. Quinlan (3L), currently a clinic student at the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office.

Professor Kathy Cerminara accepted an offer from the Washburn Law Journal to publish her article, "Law, Perception, and Cultural Cognition Near the End of Life," in volume 55, issue 3.
Professor Mark Dobson appeared on the WPBT-TV "Viewpoint" program, which aired several times in February. Dobson discussed the Criminal Justice Reform Act now pending in Congress, and the issues of racial disparity in prosecution and incarceration. He was joined by Professor Tamara Lawson from St. Thomas University School of Law.

Professor Richard Grosso was quoted in an article entitled, "That Sinking Feeling" in The American Prospect (Winter 2016), an article about sea level rise in South Florida and the effects it could have on the economy, development, real estate, insurance, and livability for the millions of Floridians who live in the region.
Professor Emeritus and Dean Emeritus Joseph Harbaugh
has received his second Fulbright Specialist Fellowship. Harbaugh will be visiting the University of Barcelona Faculty of Law during the spring 2016 term. As a Fulbright Fellow, Harbaugh will teach, present a negotiation program and lectures for the Barcelona Bar Association and provide in-house workshops for several large Barcelona firms.

Professor Kate Webber accepted an offer from The Columbia Journal of Gender and Law to publish her article, Families are More Popular than Feminism: Exploring the Greater Judicial Success of Family and Medical Leave Laws.

Professor James Wilets
appeared on NBC on February 15, speaking about the Guantanamo Commission trials. Wilets commented on the debate about women guarding Islamic men at the compound. Wilets also has published two chapters in the Encyclopedia of Forensic and Legal Medicine on the International Criminal Court and International Criminal Law generally.

Law Center Plus Seminar Series: Continuing Your Legal Education
Law Center Plus provides ongoing skills training and other resources for our alumni, especially our newest members. A series of ten seminars each year will include practice skills that will build confidence among new attorneys and educate all our alumni seeking to improve their knowledge and skills in a variety of areas. Seminars are held monthly on Friday mornings at the College of Law and are free to alumni in their first 24 months post-graduation. Other alumni and attorneys may attend for a registration fee. All attendees receive a continental breakfast and CLE credits.
