President’s Message

There’s something unmistakably energizing about the arrival of summer. Even now, long past many of our own school days, we still feel that familiar buzz and sense of freedom that came rushing in the moment the final bell rang, and the classroom doors flung open for summer break. For kids, it’s a time of later bedtimes, backyard adventures and baseball games under a late-setting sun. For us in the mortgage world, summer brings its own version of excitement — longer days, more listings, and a fresh wave of families chasing new beginnings. It’s the heart of purchase season — a time when all the preparation, networking and pipeline work begins to bear fruit.

Just as a kid counts down the final days of school with growing anticipation, so too do mortgage professionals feel that rising pulse as summer approaches. There’s a promise in this season — a chance to help more Iowans find their place to call home, to partner with agents and builders in meaningful ways, and to lead with the kind of professionalism and heart that define this industry at its best. The IMA’s mission is to equip, connect and elevate mortgage professionals across our state. Summer gives us the perfect backdrop to do just that — putting our training, relationships and community focus into action at the busiest time of year.

This is our season, and I hope it excites you as much as it does me. Let’s meet it with purpose, joy and that same sense of anticipation we once felt walking out of school on the last day before summer break.

Here’s to a strong, spirited summer full of momentum, meaning and memories.

Make it count.

HMDA Data Tops List of Violations in 2024

On May 20, the Federal Reserve published the Consumer Compliance Outlook — First Issue 2025. This issue highlighted Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA) compliance violations found by Fed examiners in 2024. HMDA was at the top of the list with 38.2% of the total violations cited in these examinations. Areas that resulted in infringements included:

  • Universal loan identifier
  • Application received dates
  • Loan purpose
  • Action taken
  • Gross annual income
  • Demographic information of co-applicants
  • Census tract location

The root causes of these violations often included the absence of compliance-related procedures and controls to ensure accurate reporting, as well as a general lack of understanding of the data point requirements. Institutions are reminded to review and validate data collection and reporting processes to ensure they are accurately collecting and reporting HMDA Data.
