Opportunities: Send missionaries, volunteer

Executive Director David Johnson talks with Steve Hayes, retired International Mission Board missionary and Arizona's IMB trustee. Learn about the upcoming IMB Sending Celebration at North Phoenix Baptist Church Feb. 14 and volunteer opportunities at the Paris Olympics.

IMB Sending Celebration In Phoenix Feb. 14

Join us to send your newest International Mission Board missionaries to the nations. Worship with us through stories of how God called these missionaries and hear a challenge from IMB President Paul Chitwood. NPHX Church, February 14, 7 p.m.

IMB volunteer opportunities during Paris Olympics

Paris will host the 2024 Olympics. Opportunities will abound for proclaiming the gospel, and IMB missionaries and French Christians are preparing. The plans call for teams of volunteers from the United States to serve alongside them.

With IMB missionaries Trish and Caleb Spacht — whose home church is Happy Valley Baptist Church in Glendale — now serving in Paris, the hope is that Arizona Southern Baptists will join them as volunteers. Individuals and teams are needed to stay and serve with IMB teams for a minimum of five days during the weeks before the Olympics, during the Olympics or during the Paralympics. Multiple dates are available. Applications are due Feb. 29.

Groups Matter seminars target small group ministry

Discipleship happens in groups.

And that’s why Pastor John Guillott thought it was worthwhile to bring several of his small group leaders to the Groups Matter Seminar in Tucson on Monday, Jan. 22. The seminar was held in Tempe the following day.

“Small groups are a great way to really begin to help people dig deeper and learn discipleship and learn from each other and encourage one another,” said Guillott, pastor of Green Valley Baptist Church, which is about 30 minutes south of Tucson.

The seminar, led by Ken Braddy, director of groups ministry at Lifeway Christian Resources, offered pastors and ministry leaders in Tucson and Tempe training in starting new small groups, equipping leaders and encouraging group-based discipleship.

Research offered during the seminar asserted that people connected to a group are more likely to grow spiritually, serve, share their faith and give of their finances, among other qualities.

Andrew Marchbanks

February 4-10

As a Christian Challenge missionary, Andrew Marchbanks is making disciples at Arizona Christian University in Glendale. This chapter of Challenge is unique in that Andrew is reaching out to a population that mostly professes Christ. Andrew and his student leaders need wisdom in discerning those ACU students who have saving faith from those who do not. Also, this uniqueness gives them a tremendous opportunity to develop disciples who can grow into leaders who see themselves as missionaries to the world. Andrew serves on the staff at First Southern Baptist Church at Sahuaro Ranch, Glendale.

How to Pray:

  • For softened hearts in this city.
  • For strength and courage in God’s children to reach out to the lost and hurting.

IMB Sending Celebration in Phoenix

February 11-17

Each year the International Mission Board hosts several Sending Celebrations throughout the country to gather Southern Baptists to worship together, pray and send out Southern Baptists’ newest missionaries. Arizona has been chosen to host a Sending Celebration on February 14 at North Phoenix Baptist Church (NPHX Church). Each Sending Celebration features the stories of how God has called these missionaries to be sent forth to those who have never heard the gospel.

How to Pray:

  • For wisdom and grace as these missionaries learn new languages to share the gospel.
  • That the children of the missionaries would settle into their new cultures well.
  • For favor as these missionaries apply for visas to live in their new locations.
