Highlights of IMECaN workshop on Fostering Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Interdisciplinary Marine Research
Charles Addey (Organizing Committee of IMECaN)
The Interdisciplinary Marine Early Career Network (IMECaN) held a virtual workshop on 11 October 2022 that addressed Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in interdisciplinary marine research. The workshop featured three invited speakers: Dr. Ingrid van Putten, Dr. Stephanie Brodie, and Dr. Becca Shellock, who shared their personal experiences and approach to DEI in their interdisciplinary research. Detailed discussions were further carried out in different smaller breakout groups. The facilitated discussions were focused on three overarching questions: (i) What does DEI mean for you and your research community? (ii) What are the main challenges or barriers to DEI that you face as an interdisciplinary marine researcher? (iii) How can DEI be improved or fostered within interdisciplinary marine research?
At the end of the breakout discussion, there was an interactive plenary session summarizing the workshop's outcome. A perspective paper on the workshop topic will be published with workshop attendees invited to contribute as co-authors.
The video of the presentations of the three invited speakers is available on the IMBeR page.

IYAFA 2022 is ending, but commitments must continue
The International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture (IYAFA 2022) is coming to an end, but work must continue until small-scale artisanal fishers, fish farmers, and fish workers are fully recognized and empowered. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has been the lead agency for celebrating the year in collaboration with other relevant organizations and bodies of the United Nations system. Hundreds of activities and events were organized worldwide to highlight the importance of small-scale artisanal fisheries and aquaculture for our food systems, livelihoods, culture and the environment.
If you are interested in useful resources and guidance for a broad range of stakeholders don´t miss the opportunity to take a look at The Global Action Plan (GAP) of the IYAFA 2022. Watch the video: Small in Scale, Big in Value

Researcher spotlight: Exploring Southern Ocean Productivity
Have some research or experiences you’d like to share?
Email us to include a piece in the next newsletter!
The Southern Ocean’s Antarctic Convergence zone is very high in marine productivity, however, our understanding of what drives this productivity still contains gaps in knowledge. Over the last 7 weeks, University of British Columbia (UBC) Ph.D. Candidate and 2022 National Geographic Explorer, Alexis Bahl, took part in an expedition to the Southern Ocean with her UBC teammates, Dr. Evgeny Pakhomov, Lora Pakhomov, and PhD Candidate, Florian Lüskow. Living aboard the Alfred Wegener’s Research Vessel, Polarstern, contained a multitude of experiences that can be read about on her blog. In an effort to better understand the region’s most abundant tunicate species, Salpa thompsoni, Alexis and her team conducted sampling with a high-resolution camera and nets. Pictured below are her teammates separating species from a nighttime net sample to 600 m. Results on how S. thompsoni contributes to the region’s productivity will be the focal point of future publications.
