Early Career Researcher Spotlight
Peter Teye Busumprah is a Fisheries Officer working at the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (Government of Ghana) and is a student of the National Aquaculture Center (GHANA). He is the Node Coordinator for Early Career Ocean Professional (Ghana Node) (UN OCEAN DECADE). His work involves working towards UN Ocean Decade challenges 8 and 9 to create a digital representation of the ocean & skills, knowledge and technology for all. Peter is a member of the International Association of Hydrological Science of (IUGG)(Germany), American Fisheries Society (USA), African Network of Deep-water Researchers and Global Ocean Observation System. Peter recently received the Global Ocean Tribute Awards on behalf of the Early Career Ocean Professionals -ECOP Africa for the project titled “Nature Based Carbon Removal and Sustainable Aquaculture in Africa”.

A recent new paper introduces Biosphere Futures, a global collection of place-based social-ecological scenario case studies. If you work in this space, please be sure to check the database, join this thriving community platform and add your scenarios.

  • Webinar on visual storytelling, ICES Strategic Initiative on Integration of Early Career Scientists (SIIECS) seminar series provides a platform for sharing marine science outputs, focusing on early career scientists, 12 March 2024, 13:00 - 14:00 (CET). Register for the webinar here. 
  • The DOORS ('Developing Optimal and Open Research Support' for the Black Sea) Research Exchange involves a one-week physical placement of each successful applicant (participant) in a host institution under the guidance of a local mentor. Travel, accommodation and subsistence are all covered, please submit your application by email before the closing date of 23:59 CET, on Thursday, 14 March 2024. See more details here. 
  • PhD fellowship in Climate impacts on pollinators and crop yield along an elevation gradient in Tanzania at the University of Copenhagen Denmark. More information here Deadline 15 March 2024.
  • IOC Training Course and Identification Qualification in Harmful Marine Microalgae 2024 – ‘Brush-up’.The number of participants is limited to 16 persons, first come-first served. The registration will be open from 19 February-31 March 2024. More details here. 
  • The Ocean Yearbook co-editors are seeking manuscripts for Ocean Yearbook Volume 39, to be published in June 2025. The official deadline is 31 March 2024, but submissions will be accepted until 5th July 2024. Additional information is available in the Call for Papers. For any recent/current students out there, check out the Student Paper Prize with a chance to have your research papers on marine affairs subjects published here. 
  • Are you a diver? Or someone who just loves the ocean and would like to push for stronger climate action in your community? Check the Divers for Climate website, a community working worldwide with several goals to take climate action in the oceans. Their program is endorsed now as a UN Ocean Decade Activity!
  • Ocean Literacy self-paced training courses provided by IOC-UNESCO, specifically targeting educators, media professionals, architects and urban planners, government officials and civil society, from 20 October 2023 to 30 December 2024. Find more on how to enrol in these courses here.
