May 2022
And this is the word of the Lord God to you all, and a charge to you all in the presence of the living God: be patterns, be examples in all countries, places, islands, nations, wherever you come, that your carriage and life may preach among all sorts of people, and to them; then you will come to walk cheerfully over the world, answering that of God in every one.”

Workday and Mechanical Tour of the Meetinghouse, May 7

Help our Meetinghouse a better place for the Quaker and wider community to enjoy! Increase your understanding of the building and its systems! Join us May 7 for a workday at 10 am followed by a light lunch and then a mechanical tour of the meetinghouse at 1:30 pm.

The workday could include cleaning up around the outside of the building, washing windows, minor repairs and decluttering the basement. Bring a light lunch (we will provide pizza) and stay for the tour, or skip the workday and come just for the tour. Tony Serviente will show us the mechanical systems in the building, and how they work together to create a pleasant environment. Learn about all the pipes, valves, gauges, connections, and settings. Then, if you are in the building and some kind of mishap occurs or an alarm goes off, you might be able to take immediate action without panicking. Besides, it will be interesting and fun.

Supporting the New York Health Act

The New York Health Act [A.6058/S.5474] will provide comprehensive, universal health coverage for every New York resident and worker, replacing existing private insurance company coverage. You and your health care providers work to keep you healthy. New York Health pays the bill. This plan is similar to Medicare or the Canadian system — but better.

FingerLakes for New York Health needs your help in putting 18x24 signs out by your road or street. Request a sign from Ruth Yarrow (206-512-0688) or rmyarrow@gmail.com.

Each sign will come with a flyer covering current info on the New York Health Act.

Spring Gathering, May 20-22, brings together our region

Let's put one foot in front of the other... and... Lead with Love!

Farmington Scipio Regional Meeting (FSRM) is includes New York's Quaker Meetings from Syracuse down to Elmira, and west from there. Friends from these meetings convene a few times a year, and Spring Gathering is a favorite event.

After two years of virtual connection, the Farmington Scipio Regional Meeting Events Planning Committee is hoping and planning to host an in-person Spring Gathering at Watson Homestead, with multiple hybrid events. We are excited. We have so missed each other.

This year Restorative Justice Circles leader Lori DeCarlo will lead us as we work to create a safe place to get to know each other even more deeply, to share life's struggles and influences as we journey together towards becoming a truly Beloved Community. We plan to continue building trust and share where we have been, and what we are still working on.

Please bring your talents. The Saturday night Talent Show is on!

More details will be shared via after Meeting announcements and email messages.

Despair. Brain cramp. Shoulders tight. Shallow breathing.
I forgot my quilt in the dryer.
Added coins.
brackelybrackel the sound they make as they tumble into the machine.
It spins.
A neighbor invites me to see her remodeled kitchen.
Cigarette smoke in the air.
A pack on her kitchen table.
Beautiful cabinets, stainless steel appliances, Corian (registered trademark insert here) counter tops, even a dish-washer?
We can have dishwashers in our building?
Yes, she smiles as if divulging a magical secret.
We chat.
This and that.
Work is hard to get at age 60.
she says.
But she found a good job.
Work is hard to get.
Work is hard.
To.
Get.
Get it?
hard to get.
like some coy date.
My quilt from the winter is now dry.
I pull it out all toasty and I wrap myself in it over my head and around me in a tent of warmth as if I am someone with autism or
other high sensitivity syndrome and I stand there
a moment because no one is in
the laundry.
It smells good and I didn't even use soap or a dryer sheet.
I take it upstairs and lovingly
fold it over and rest it on the foot of the bed
because the night can still get cold and I
we
might need it.
The cramp in my brain is not as bad but it's still bad.
The sun is buttery and golden and like a crazy
daffodil laughing at my self absorbtion.
Okay! OKAY! I'm going out. I'M GOING OUT.
on the roof.
ON THE ROOF!
I will not jump.
I grab the packet of wild flowers that say HELP THE BEES! on it and
find myself,
my hands,
my short cropped fingernails,
my stubby fingers,
deep in soil.
Soil that is cool and damp
from the morning rain.
How the soil covets the wetness and will
not give it up easily even up here
where the wind is steady and brisk.
I clear out the old leaves,
pull up the invasive species
of what I know not
find paper and champagne foil and
other detritus
and brush it all together with my hands
into a huge, black trash bag.
twigs
old vines
our compost is kaput
so all this goes in that black plastic
non biodegradable bag
and I water the newly planted seeds
scattered in all of my pots
large
medium
small
they all have wild flowers now.
I brushed them like I would brush
the fog of my breath
with my hand against a window
but this is dark earth.
I brush the earth and plant the seeds,
the multi-colored flowers.
My skin tingles with sunshine.
My shoulders relax.
I breath in air that is chilled
vino verde
and drink.
