Team Feature

For this month's team feature, we are delighted to introduce another group of medical writers: Steph Byrd, Nick Luciano, and Erin Peters, who are under the stewardship of Kasturi Puranam.

Following her graduate research, Kasturi was immersed in the world of academic research for many years studying the molecular mechanisms of human diseases. Her move to Medical Writing was mainly due to an interest in clinical drug development. She was honored when IMPACT hired her. Since joining IMPACT, the lifelong learner in Kasturi has enjoyed all aspects of regulatory writing and drug development. Possessing a deep interest and experience in basic sciences, she is very excited each time she handles a project and gets to see how the discovery at the bench traveled all the way to a drug in the market. The most enjoyment that she experiences, however, comes from the opportunities at IMPACT to mentor and train junior writers.

Steph started her career working in a GMP facility as an analytical development specialist where she quickly realized that she didn't want to work in the lab. During this time, she learned how much she enjoyed writing lab reports and assisting with responses to regulatory agencies. Her next position was as a project manager/scientific writer for several years where she had the opportunity to learn project management skills and expand her regulatory and industry knowledge as a scientific writer. Since joining IMPACT, she has really enjoyed the sense of belonging to a team, but has also enjoyed the complete ownership you have of a document – from project initiation to project finalization. Steph believes that IMPACT values professional development, shown by the various training and development opportunities available.

Nick received his PhD in Neurobiology from Duke University studying neural stem cells. Nick then took a Post-doctoral fellowship, also in the Duke Neurobiology department, studying olfaction. During his post-doc, he was exposed to medical writing in general through a drug development course at Duke, and specifically to IMPACT when Tim Garver and Jennifer Moen came to speak to the class. He was drawn to medical writing as a field because it would allow him to use his scientific training while working collaboratively. Nick believes that one of the many great things about working at IMPACT is that you know that your co-workers care about you and will step up to help at a moment’s notice.

Previously, as a biopharmaceutics scientist, Erin collaborated with nonclinical, CMC, and clinical colleagues on a variety of pharmaceutical development projects. Over time, she found that the things she enjoyed most about the job were talking with people, writing scientific reports, and contributing to regulatory documents. She had always appreciated the “excitement” of working with different indications and products, so medical writing at a CRO like IMPACT definitely appealed to her! Since starting at IMPACT, Erin has been pleasantly surprised at how collaborative the work can be, both internally and as a client partner. At IMPACT, Erin says that she has had tons of patient and kind mentors, and someone is always willing to jump in and help if needed.
