Prayer

August 2026

Prayer is often viewed as something complex and intimidating. Yet Scripture presents a different picture, one in which prayer is both holy and deeply personal. Rather than seeking polished words or perfect prayers, God desires sincere hearts that come to Him honestly. At its core, prayer is an ongoing conversation with God, a way of knowing Him more deeply and growing in relationship with Him. Through Jesus Christ, we have direct access to the Father and are invited to come before Him with every joy, concern, question, and hope. We don't need to complicate it or be intimidated by it, afterall prayer is for us!

For coaches and athletes, prayer can become a meaningful part of honoring God both on and off the field. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) describes prayer as much more than a pre-game tradition. Instead, it is a daily practice that helps believers align their hearts and minds with Christ, seek His guidance, and grow spiritually through continual communion with Him.

Prayer not only connects us with God but also strengthens our relationships with others. Every healthy relationship is built on communication, and our relationship with God is no different. Spending time in prayer and engaging with His Word creates opportunities to know Him more personally and to recognize His work in our lives.

Remain in Me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in Me.
John 15:4

Prayer also offers comfort. Scripture reminds us that God understands our struggles and meets us with compassion. Bringing our burdens, fears, and disappointments before Him opens the door to experiencing His peace, comfort, and healing presence.

All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.
2 Corinthians 1:3–4

Prayer is also one of the ways God shapes His people. As believers spend time with Him, the Holy Spirit works to transform their hearts, attitudes, and actions so they increasingly reflect the character of Christ. Through prayer, God invites His people to know Him more fully and to grow in faith each day.

Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like Him.
Colossians 3:10

Prayer is an essential part of the Christian life because it invites God into every aspect of our journey from everyday routines and relationships to practices, competitions, decisions, and challenges. As believers remain rooted in Christ and walk by His Spirit, they experience His presence, wisdom, and strength. Prayer becomes more than a moment; it becomes an ongoing invitation to abide in Him and to participate in the transforming work He is accomplishing in and through His people.

Prayer can take many forms, and there is no single "right" way to talk with God. Below are several prayer practices that FCA has found meaningful in helping people grow in their relationship with Christ. We invite you to explore these different ways to pray, trusting that God welcomes every sincere prayer and hears every word.

“Pray at all times in the Spirit with every prayer and request.”

Ephesians 6:18

PRAY

  • Prayer is a sacred term for conversation with God.
  • It is a two-way conversation, where you speak and listen to God.

AT ALL TIMES

  • Derives from Greek words meaning “in every season” or always.
  • Represents words that Jesus used consistently.
  • Luke 21:36 is another example:
  • “But be alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place and to stand before the Son of Man.”

IN THE SPIRIT

  • In literal terms this means “to be joined with.”
  • This represents that God (or the Holy Spirit) lives in us and enables us to pray.
  • Romans 8:15, 26 is another example:
  • “Instead, you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out, “‘Abba’, Father!” In the same way the Spirit also helps us in our weakness, because we do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with inexpressible groanings.

WITH EVERY PRAYER

  • Use the ACTS prayer pattern:
  • ADORE: Praise God for His character traits.
  • CONFESS: Tell God what's affecting your relationship with Him.
  • THANK: Praise God for what He has done.
  • SUPPLY: Ask God to provide or meet your needs and desires.

AND REQUEST

  • Has a root word of “supply” to meet needs.
  • Represents us receiving blessings from God and averting evils or fears.

PRESS Prayer:

P - PRAISE: Begin your prayer by thanking God for His goodness, which shifts your focus from your problems to His power.

R - REQUEST: Bring your specific needs and petitions before Him, asking clearly for what you need.

E - EXPECT: Believe with confidence that God hears you and will answer, even if the answer is "no" or "wait."

S - STAND: Hold your ground in faith, refusing to give in to worry or fear as you wait on God’s timing.

S - SURRENDER: Let go of control and trust that His will is ultimately for your good.
