SMSU Softball

The FCA SMSU Softball huddle is a space where athletes can explore faith at their own pace and ask the questions necessary to help them better understand the Gospel. The girls who attend share a homemade meal, honest conversations, and time in the Bible. Huddle coaches Gina and Bailey work together to create a space where athletes feel comfortable asking questions and growing in their faith. Bailey brings both experience and heart to the FCA Softball huddle as a huddle coach and former athlete who spent five years playing softball for Coach Bouman at SMSU. Having walked through the challenges of being a college athlete far from home, Bailey is passionate about pouring into athletes who are navigating this season of life. She knows firsthand how difficult college athletics can be and how much harder it is without God at the center. The atmosphere of fellowship in the FCA Softball huddle has opened the door for heartfelt conversations, discipleship, and a growing hunger for Christ among the softball athletes.

God is writing a story of pursuit, transformation, and courage one heart at a time. Softball athlete, Ava, joined FCA because she was hungry for depth, for community, and for a place where her faith could grow roots. Surrounded by people who genuinely want to walk with the Lord, she found the encouragement she desired. Now, as a student FCA leader, she lights up watching each large group gathering grow bigger than the last, evidence that God is stirring something powerful on campus. “Every large group we have, there’s more and more people,” she says. “It’s the best thing to see.”

Leadership has expanded Ava’s world beyond the softball diamond. It’s opened doors to friendships with athletes from other teams, strengthened relationships within the FCA community, and deepened the bond she shares with her own teammates. Through FCA, she has been equipped to be a friend that her teammates know they can open up to, both on and off the field.

Ava has seen God use FCA to remind student-athletes that their identity runs deeper than their athletic performance. Hearing speakers share testimonies, exploring Scripture, and wrestling together with what it means to find worth in Christ alone have reshaped the way many athletes view themselves and their purpose.

Recently, that truth came to life in a profound way as several of Ava’s teammates chose to be baptized. A large portion of the team gathered in support of their teammates' baptisms and Ava felt her heart swell. “It meant the world to watch them publicly give their lives to the Lord. There’s nothing more special.”

For Ava, walking alongside her teammates through FCA made those moments even more impactful. She cherishes the privilege of being part of their journey and witnessing firsthand what God is doing through this ministry. He is pursuing athletes, strengthening friendships, reshaping identities, and building a community anchored not in performance, but in Christ.

This rings true for Ella who grew up in a small town where her identity felt inseparable from sports. Things began to change when she stepped into college life and found herself a little lost. Her softball teammates encouraged her to attend FCA huddles and various other ministry events at SMSU. Soon, she found herself surrounded by a community that pointed her toward Christ.

Through the guidance of her FCA leaders and through many heartfelt conversations, Ella began forming relationships that strengthened her faith and reminded her that her identity was not rooted in her athletic performance, but in Christ.

As she grew closer to Jesus Ella realized something important, something life-changing. The Lord’s plan for her went far beyond the field. He was leading her to discover her true identity in Him. That understanding sparked something new, a desire to publicly declare what God was doing in her heart.

For Ella, baptism was a declaration. She wanted the world to know that her identity was no longer tied to her achievements, successes, or how others viewed her. God had been teaching her that her worth didn’t come from wins, titles, or accomplishments, but from being His child. In the waters of baptism, she symbolized the washing away of her old self and the beginning of a new life, grounded in Christ.

As a baptized follower of Jesus, Ella is stepping forward with purpose. Her next chapter is about growing deeper in her relationship with the Lord through prayer, reading her Bible, and staying connected to a Christian community that encourages her to live boldly for Christ. She wants her life to reflect His love in every decision, every action, and every opportunity. With God guiding her future, Ella is ready to become the person He created her to be living out her faith with strength, joy, and confidence in Christ alone.

We all, with unveiled faces, are looking as in a mirror at the glory of the Lord and are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory; this is from the Lord who is the Spirit.
