The Medical College of Wisconsin, Institute for Health & Equity, is conducting research with individuals who use illicit opioids (prescription opioids for non-medical purposes or heroin/fentanyl).
This study, which is funded through the National Institute on Drug Abuse, is examining the impact that state law and policy has on illicit opioid use and the transition to the use of heroin and the injection of heroin. The goal is to understand the circumstances surrounding the transition to heroin and the transition to injection drug use, as well as any unintended consequences that well-meaning law and policy may have had. Additionally, the research team (led by Dr. Julia Dickson-Gomez) is hoping to identify gaps in each study area that need attention, such as the availability of treatment, for example.
The research team is currently conducting surveys with individuals who use illicit opioids (or have within the last 6 months) in Milwaukee County. To be eligible, individuals must be over the age of 18, live in Milwaukee County, and have used illicit opioids in the last 6 months. The researchers are seeking a total of 100 participants in Milwaukee to complete the survey (currently have 35 participants).
Upon completion, participants are given resource packets that contain several documents: a copy of the consent form, a compiled list of all AODA and mental health services in Milwaukee County, and flyers on Narcan, the Good Samaritan Law, signs of an overdose, and safe injection sites. Additionally, participants are paid $50 cash for their time and participation.
The study is covered by a Certificate of Confidentiality through the National Institute of Health. All participant information is kept secure and confidential. If you have any questions, please contact Jessica Ohlrich at johlrich@mcw.edu.
