Legislative Update SB 662 (Rubio)

SB 662 (Rubio) - ER Bill Has Been Held in the Senate Appropriations Committee and will NOT move forward this year!

SB 662 (Rubio), a bill which seeks to expand electronic recording in California’s civil courtrooms including family law, mental health, and domestic violence proceedings, was held in the Senate Appropriations Committee today until January 2024.

The bill will NOT move forward this year, however, the author has the option to revive the bill and ask for it to be revoted on in the Senate Appropriations Committee in January 2024.

This is a huge win for California CSRs for this legislative year! A heartfelt thank you to our lobbyist Ignacio Hernandez of Hernandez Strategy Group for his tireless efforts on our behalf to stop this bill in its tracks!

The holding of this bill until January 2024 does not mean that our work is done. We must continue to make sure courts are using all funding sources available to hire court reporters to cover all case types in California’s courts.

CCRA wishes to wholeheartedly thank all the associations, organizations, unions, and individuals who stood firmly against the expansion of electronic recording in California, including the California Deposition Reporters Association, the National Court Reporters Association, SEIU, OCEA, and LACCRA, just to name a few.

CCRA appreciates every letter written and every call made in opposition to this bill. Your voices were heard that electronic recording is an inferior method of capturing the record and the citizens of California deserve the gold standard - a licensed court reporter!

CCRA is constantly advocating for the court reporting profession. Our work never stops. Your membership and active participation in CCRA matters and it makes a difference. Thank you so much for your support!
