The new Siem Reap International Airport is now expected to open earlier than anticipated. A statement released by the project director from Yunnan Investment Group (company investor), stated that the new airport is now 86% complete with an opening date set to October 2023.
Although no official government announcement has been made confirming the the exact opening date, legitimate sources (i.e. Phnom Penh Post) has released an article on the subject. Below are some important information you need to know.
-
The New Siem Reap Angkor International Airport (NSRIA) was initially proposed to replace the existing Siem Reap Airport to allow for larger tourism and bigger aircrafts, as well as to protect the Angkor Archeological Zone from noises and vibrations. The older Siem Reap airport will close entirely.
-
Location is 51 kilometers, approximately 90 minutes drive from Siem Reap town centre. A new road is being built which will cut the distance to 44 km however, it is not known whether this will be finished in time for the proposed October opening.
- Once in operation, flying from REP to PNH (or vice versa) will no longer be recommended as it would take almost the same amount of time (or even less) to drive overland.
-
Cost of Airport Transfers will have to be increased to cover the longer distance (from 7km to 44km). Exact prices are still to be determined.
-
Tour guides rates accompanying airport transfers will also increase to cover approximately a half-day's rate.
We are currently working on new (estimated) rates for our Online Tariff. All new requests for travel from October 2023 onwards, will be quoted according to the new rates. This means, we will also need to adjust the rates of our private and group tour packages.
For existing bookings, falling in or after the above date, we highly recommend that you contact us ASAP for more information.
