Dear HHA Members & Friends,
I am excited to share this edition of our bi-annual New & Updates. Please take a moment to peruse the information and feel welcome to connect with me directly. The HHA continues to grow and thrive and one thing in particular is the power of philanthropy inspired by this group. As 'Hennepinites' you deeply understand and appreciate the mission at Hennepin Healthcare. Thank you for your continued support! Your generosity makes a significant difference to so many people every day.
I want to offer a reminder that you have an HHA home on campus. The HHA home is located in the Belzer Family Dining & Wellness Center on the main level of the Blue Building. The Center is accessible with employee photo ID. All HHA members are eligible for onboarding as an HHA volunteer and will receive a photo ID. The ID is renewed annually and also provides access to the medical library, located on the Red Building Skyway.
Hennepin Healthcare Foundation supports HHA activities and members with a diverse array of philanthropic tools. We welcome visits, phone calls and are available to meet at your convenience.
If you have news, a story or recognition to share, I'd love to hear from you!
We look forward to seeing you soon.
Cheers,
Robin Hoppenrath

The Foundation hosted this fun event on October 14th at France44 in Minneapolis. Over 60 guests registered and enjoyed camaraderie, reconnection, great food and refreshments. Please see more photos on the HHA Webpage.
Hennepin Healthcare History Center leadership committee provided an update on their efforts this year. They also provided historical images and information that scrolled on a feed to monitors in the event area. LINK to video: Hennepin Healthcare History Center Slideshow 2024

Hennepin Healthcare History Center
The Hennepin Healthcare History Center recently celebrated their 30th anniversary! Thank you to all who could attend the "Here for History" event on September 21. The morning was a huge success. Seeing colleagues either reunite after years or simply socialize with those they see often was a powerful reminder of the community that Hennepin Healthcare has created.
The remarks we equally as moving. Our CEO, Jennifer DeCubellis, opened the program. We then heard from Mary Ellen Bennett about the current initiatives including the new endowment for the History Center started by our very own Rondine Mehling, RN. This endowment is intended to preserve the story of Hennepin Healthcare, ensuring that the legacy of our healthcare system will be accessible to all. Tom Hayes concluded the program giving guests a full spectrum view of the physical footprint of where Hennepin Healthcare has been, where we are and where we are going. Tours were available concluding the event. The deep roots planted in our history are YOUR history!
| If you want to learn more or you have any questions about supporting the History Center, the endowment, or how you can get involved please contact Matthew Munoz. | |
Moral Injury Prevention Program (MIPP)
Program Leader: Mark Linzer, MD, Director of Education, Mentorship and Scholarship & Tom Klemond, MD, VP of Medical Affairs
This 2023-24 campaign was supported by many HHA members and the initial financial goal was met by a very generous gift given by an anonymous HHA member.
This work would not be possible without the engagement and philanthropy of HHA. It is with the utmost gratitude that we thank you for supporting a program that changes the daily lives of clinicians.
Here is an update from Dr. Linzer:
"MIPP is going along so very well! The year's major activity will be podcasts with Dr. Radin and Dr. Santana (trauma psych), Dr. Heaney (suicide prevention), Dr. Guarke (ethical challenges), Jimmy McMurray, Catherine Deya and Adele Groethe (nursing in the ICU), Abby Thacher (EMS)… you get the idea! Also a speaker series with guests from UCLA, Hopkins and Harvard, and more unit based ethics and trauma psych discussions with Dr. Radin and Dr. Santana. Plus, the renaissance of Schwartz Rounds. Wow. Go MIPP! Thank you HHF!!!!!"
You know best what it is to work and walk the floors of Hennepin Healthcare. Thank you for fortifying the daily lives of medical staff.
To learn more about MIPP, please contact Matthew Munoz.

Resident Integrated Support Environment (RISE)
Program Leader: Meghan Walsh, MD, Chief Education & Research Officer
Supported by HHA program campaign, The RISE team now includes two dedicated psychiatrists and therapists and a program manager. This dedicated team continues to meet the demand of providing wraparound services for our medical residents. As part of our commitment to the Dr. Lorna Breen Heroes’ Foundation to enact systems change, we have now pushed to change the common app for all payors to language that eliminates barriers for medical students’ and providers ability to seek mental healthcare. This is a huge win for mental health disclosure in credentialing at the state level that will go into effect on 1/1/2025.
You can find more information at the RISE webpage. If you're curious about the Lorna Breen Heroes Foundation, more information can be found at their webpage.
To learn more about how you can support RISE, contact Helen Liebe.

Giving and Getting: Is a Year-End QCD Right for You?
We would love to connect with you. If you’d like to learn more, please reach out to Hennepin Healthcare Foundation Office at 612-873-6090 or connect directly with Chad Boysen, Development Director. chad.boysen@hcmed.org or 651.210.4938 (cell).
As the end of the year approaches, many of us are considering our giving priorities. This year, instead of reaching for your wallet, consider some alternative ways to make a difference. Did you know you can support your favorite causes with an IRA gift instead of cash? It’s easier than you might think!
Once you turn 73, you’re required to start taking money out of your IRA, known as a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD). But here’s a little-known fact: you can donate directly from your IRA to a charity without paying taxes on that amount through a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). This means you can give up to $105,000 each year to support the causes that matter most to you.
By giving in this way, you not only avoid paying income tax on your donation, but it also counts toward your RMD, helping you meet those requirements. This can lower your taxable income and potentially reduce your tax burden—making it a true win-win! If you’re looking for a meaningful way to give back while managing your retirement funds, this could be the perfect option for you.
