Broadband Data Task Force

Releases Training Videos on

Data Collection Challenges

The Broadband Data Task Force issued a public notice announcing the release of two training videos to assist internet service providers in responding to individual and bulk fixed availability challenges as part of the Broadband Data Collection.

The first video demonstrates how to access challenge data, concede a challenge, dispute a challenge, track the status of challenges, submit evidence and report on the status of disputed challenges within the BDC system.

The second video provides an overview of each step in responding to a challenge and includes information on illustrative questions that may arise as providers navigate the challenge process.

Senate Commerce Committee Holds Hearing on Broadband Needs

Last week, Sen. Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.), Chair of the Subcommittee on Communications, Media and Broadband, convened a subcommittee hearing titled “Ensuring Solutions to Meet America’s Broadband Needs.” Communications sector experts from the private, nonprofit and state government sectors told Senators that the “once-in-a-generation” broadband expansion funding approved last year by Congress will only close the digital divide when underserved communities gain full connectivity, but there are still many obstacles to overcome in reaching that goal. Witnesses also voiced concerns about billions of dollars in resources failing to go to the neediest areas first due to inadequate coordination by government agencies.

The full hearing can be viewed here.

Pallone Elected Ranking Member of House E&C Committee

Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-N.J.) was unanimously elected by the House Democratic Caucus unanimously as Ranking Member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee for the 118th Congress.

The Energy and Commerce Committee is the oldest continuous standing committee in the House of Representatives. It was established in 1795 to regulate interstate and foreign commerce. Today, the Committee has the broadest jurisdiction of any authorizing committee in Congress. It legislates on healthcare; health insurance; biomedical research and development; food safety; clean air and climate change; safe drinking water; national energy policy; nuclear facilities; electronic communications and the internet; privacy, cybersecurity, and data security; consumer protection and product safety; travel, tourism, and sports; interstate and foreign commerce; and other areas.

Matsui Urges FCC to Improve E-Rate Cybersecurity Protections

Rep. Doris Matsui (D-Calif.) sent a letter to FCC Chairwoman Rosenworcel urging her to improve cybersecurity protections for K-12 schools using the FCC’s E-rate Program. Matsui urged the FCC to coordinate with other federal agencies as it considers an appropriate path forward to help ensure any E-rate updates avoid duplication with other government efforts and balance E-rate’s focus on connections, while allowing the existing cybersecurity capability to stay relevant.
