ON DEMAND: What Companies Need to Know About ESG

Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations are driving significant change for technology companies globally. As they focus on innovation, tech companies also need to navigate ESG risks amid an intensified regulatory environment and political tensions in the United States.

In last week's INCOMPAS webinar, Hogan Lovells Partners Karl Racine and Kristy Greenberg discussed "What Every Company Should Know About ESG." During the webinar, you will learn about the basics of ESG, the evolving regulatory and political landscape surrounding ESG in the U.S., and the need for companies to prioritize ESG risk management.

BroadLAND Highlights 'Broadband Ready Checklist' at

U.S. Conference of Mayors Event

The BroadLAND campaign introduced the “Broadband Ready City Checklist,” a new way to help cities and local communities speed deployment, attract competition and better prepare for historic network investment. The Checklist was introduced last week at the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Columbus, Ohio.

Panelists discuss the Broadband Ready City Checklist at the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

From left to right, Porter Wright Partner Andrew C. Emerson; Rebecca Hussey, Crown Castle; Long Beach, Calif., Mayor Rex Richardson: Glendale, Ariz., Mayor Jerry Weiers; Ariane Schaffer, Google Fiber.

At a panel co-sponsored by Crown Castle and featuring Google Fiber, the BroadLAND campaign highlighted the benefits of the Checklist in a conversation with more than a dozen leading mayors.

The panel featured Long Beach, Calif., Mayor Rex Richardson who highlighted the economic impact of faster infrastructure deployment, stressing the need for batch permitting and the benefits of competition and colocation. Jerry Weiers, Mayor of Glendale, Ariz., talked about rapid deployment of 5G to prepare for last year’s Super Bowl and other major events where broadband is critical.

Rebecca Hussey, Associate General Counsel, Government Relations at Crown Castle, spoke to the five points for success detailed in the Checklist and urged mayors to ensure broadband money is spent on broadband projects. This includes having transparent review and smart restoration. Ariane Schaffer, Public Policy and Government Affairs Manager for Google Fiber, talked about streamlining for speed and embracing innovations like micro trenching.

“The BroadLAND Checklist will help local leaders prepare for successful infrastructure deployment that attract competition and private investment to ensure new networks drive the jobs of the future and make 'Internet for All' a reality,” said INCOMPAS CEO and BroadLAND co-chair Chip Pickering, who opened the panel with co-chair and former FCC Commissioner Mignon Clyburn.

Broadband Resolutions Adopted at Mayor's Conference

Broadband resolutions were adopted on June 5 at the United States Conference of Mayors annual meeting The resolutions included:

CPF Connects Nearly 2 Million Families, Businesses in First Year

One year after announcing the first awards under the American Rescue Plan’s Capital Projects Fund (CPF), the U.S. Department of the Treasury has awarded approximately $6.7 billion for broadband, digital technology and multi-purpose community center projects in 42 states, which those states estimate will reach more than 1.88 million businesses, homes and other locations. The effort is part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda and the Administration’s goal of bringing affordable high-speed internet to all Americans.

The CPF provides $10 billion to states, territories, freely associated states and Tribal governments to fund broadband infrastructure projects that increase access to high-speed internet for millions of Americans. In addition to broadband infrastructure projects, some states like Kansas are investing in digital connectivity technology projects that aim to address gaps in digital equity, affordability and broadband adoption, while other states – like Connecticut, Delaware and Idaho – are using CPF resources to build and improve multi-purpose community centers where residents can access high-speed internet.
