House Holds Hearing on

AI Infrastructure Power Demand

Last week, the House Science, Space and Technology Subcommittee on Energy held a hearing titled "Powering Demand: Nuclear Solutions for AI Infrastructure."


During the hearing, members and witnesses explored how nuclear power can help meet the projected surge in AI-driven data-center demand. Speakers also highlighted the Department of Energy’s advanced reactor demonstration programs, fuel-security initiatives and the Loan Programs Office as critical to commercializing next-gen designs. The also praised tech-sector power purchase agreements (PPAs) Amazon’s investment in X-Energy, Google’s deal with Kairos and Switch’s 12 GW agreement with Oklo – for de-risking projects.

FCC Asks for Record Refresh on End-User Access Charges

The FCC issued a public notice asking parties to update the record on issues raised in the April 2020 NPRM that proposes to eliminate ex ante pricing regulation and require detariffing of various end-user charges associated with interstate access service, and prohibit carriers from separately listing these charges on customers’ telephone bills. These charges, called telephone access charges, include the subscriber line charge, access recovery charge, presubscribed interexchange carrier charge, line port charge and special access surcharge.

Sens. Fischer, Luján Announce USF Working Group

Sens. Deb Fischer (R-NE) and Ben Ray Luján (D-NM) announced the reconstitution of the Universal Service Fund Working Group. The bipartisan, bicameral working group was originally launched in 2023 to evaluate and propose potential reforms to the Universal Service Fund (USF). They also said in the coming weeks, a USF working group request for comment portal will be open on Sen. Fischer’s website to allow for the submission of updated comments on the future outlook of the USF.

House Appropriations Committee Includes

Funding for Reconnect Program in Agriculture Bill

The House Appropriations Committee last week held a markup session of the Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act. The committee, among other things, approved $90 million for the ReConnect Program.
