The Incredible Power of Naming Our Emotions

Emotions can influence our lives in many ways. One researcher gives the definition that “emotions are reactions human beings experience in response to events or situations” and the kind of emotion experienced comes from a circumstance that triggers the emotion.

We spend the majority of our lives working in a place and that work produces feelings … good, neutral and negative feelings. When we have not learned to name, process, and integrate those emotions, they can derail our mental health and our productivity at work.

Read this month's blog and learn how you as leaders and managers can positively impact your company culture by creating an environment where team members can name their emotions and allow space to process them.

CNetS social media study shows how affect labeling can help moderate emotions

A team analyzed Twitter feeds of tens of thousands of users to study how emotions change before and after they were explicitly stated.

Instead of opting for vague surface-level descriptors like, “I’m fine,” “I’m okay,” you lean into the highly complex, nuanced spectrum of emotions available, which allows you to be happier, more effective, and productive.

What Traci's Pondering: Emotions

Emotional clarity & regulation at work is paramount.

In a time and age when mental health issues are on the rise, 50% of Americans are quiet quitting, and happiness in America is at an all-time low, naming emotions is one immediate way we can change our cultures at work and allow space and time for the processing of emotions.

And guess what? The research shares that just NAMING the emotion is important. We don’t need to act on the information. We can simply listen, empathize, and encourage, allowing (and empowering) employees to learn neutralize their own feelings.
