District 6 Community Highlights
Excited about our Electric Bus Rollout hosted at the Pine Hills Transportation Compound last week!
Proud of the phenomenal work being done at Dover Shores Elementary, including this beautiful mural painted by Patrick Randle, Art Teacher at Dover Shores!
Edgewater High: Our Lady Eagle wrestlers put up a mighty battle at the metro tournament. Leah and Caroline tied for 5th place in their respective weight categories and, as is the Eagle Way, our ladies demonstrated true sportsmanship and integrity amongst their competitors. Kudos to coaches Leisher and LeVere on their development of these athletes.
Winter Park HS IB: Bahia Shehab, image left, a professor at The American University in Cairo, visited our IB seniors & discussed her TEDtalk on the Arab Spring in 2011. She is an artist, historian, author, and graphic designer. Author Matthew Rozell, image right, who wrote, A Train Near Magdeburg & The Things Our Fathers Saw, is sharing his story of how he assigned a project in his US History class that eventually changed his life and this book that helped reunite Holocaust survivors with their liberators.
OCPS: Launching success from the start. A Gift For Teaching is starting a new initiative to help OCPS first-year teachers in underserved areas. Find out why these “Launch Boxes” are helping more than just teachers. [Click the image to see how these gifts are making an impact at Evans High School!
OGA and Howard MS: We are proud to announce that [Howard Middle School and Orlando Gifted Academy have both] been named a Magnet School of Distinction by Magnet Schools of America! To receive a national merit award, members of Magnet Schools of America must submit a detailed application that is scored by a panel of educators. These schools are judged and scored on their demonstrated ability to raise student academic achievement, promote racial and socioeconomic diversity, provide integrated curricula and instruction, and create strong family and community partnerships that enhance the school’s magnet theme. Congratulations!
February Is...
OCPS: It's important to learn about the contributions Black Americans make to our nation year-round. But February is a special time to reflect, celebrate, reconnect to roots and highlight Black History.
It was great to re-connect with two former colleagues of mine, Faye Hogan and Dorothy Sanders during the Lake Sybelia’s Black History Month Celebration.
It was an honor to be hosted by the Black History Celebration Committee at Lake Sybelia Elementary. Teachers and staff celebrated Black History Month with a presentation, guest speaker, music and a peach cobbler cook-off.
OCPS: It's Career and Technical Education Month! Our Orange Technical College programs provide students with a school-to-career connection, and is the foundation for a strong, well-educated workforce that contributes to Central Florida's economic stability.
OTC Blog: Orange County Public Schools CTE students from Evans High School were the first students in the world to tour and explore a new autonomous vehicle to be launched soon. As part of a NAF STEM initiative, students visited the BeepAVSolutions headquarters in Lake Nona earlier [last] week.
OCPS: We appreciate our school bus drivers for transporting students to school and their neighborhoods safely every day!
