COMMON NAME: Sedge
BOTANICAL NAME: Carex spp.
USDA ZONE: Wide range of zones
SUNLIGHT: There is a sedge for all settings with a large selection for shade.
SOIL CONDITIONS: There are many sedges for each type of soil with moist soil the most common.
HABIT: Typically, low mounding up to 1’x1’
FEATURES: Sedges are great when used to form a solid groundcover or to fill in the matrix between other perennials. They are grasslike but unique with triangular leaf blades (sedges have edges). Sedges are some of the first to bloom in late winter/early spring and provide some visual interest when viewed up close during bloom.
WHY WE LOVE IT: Sedges are one of the most adaptable perennials. They are a great option for filling in the space between other perennials and can take the place of mulch in a planting design. They provide nice green color and texture throughout the year. There are many sedges available in the industry and they can be used in all settings from wet/sun to dry/shade. Two of the most used and available sedges in Iowa are Pennsylvania Sedge and Blue Sedge.
