Urban Forestry Development Grants

Available for Iowa Communities

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR), through funding from the USDA Forest Service’s Inflation Reduction Act, is offering Urban Forestry Development grants to support community-based tree and forestry projects across Iowa.

These competitive, reimbursable grants range from $10,000 to $50,000 per applicant and do not require a match. The two-year program supports projects taking place in the spring and fall of 2026 and 2027.

Eligible projects include developing community forestry plans, establishing urban food forests, hosting educational programs, and supporting workforce development through forestry internships. Funding is available to community governmental entities, volunteer groups, and service organizations involved in managing and caring for urban and community forests—such as trees in parks, natural areas, and public rights-of-way.

The grants are designed to address community-identified urban forestry needs while advancing environmental and public health benefits. Eligibility is determined using the program’s Assessment Tool.

The application and requirements are available online at www.iowadnr.gov/urbangrants. Applications are due by 4:00 p.m. on March 17, 2026. Award recipients will be notified by March 31, 2026.

Contact Chip Murrow at chip.murrow@dnr.iowa.gov or 515-822-1031 for questions about the application, reimbursement and rules. Contact Laurie Dams at lauren.dams@dnr.iowa.gov or 515-782-6414 for application assistance, eligible projects, or to set up a site visit.

The Trial Program 2025 Top Performers

What is a Top Performer?

Plant varieties submitted to the lowa Arboretum & Gardens Trial Program are put to the test in lowa's unique climate. Perennial varieties must survive at least 3 growing seasons and two winters while shrubs must survive 5 growing seasons and 4 winters. The varieties may prove to be hardy, but they must also look good all season long and have an impressive, long lasting floral display. Top Performers are the best of the best; selected by a committee of researchers specifically for their outstanding performance in lowa. Winning plant varieties are recommended as the best plants available for central Midwest gardeners, proving to be hardy, beautiful, and easy to grow.

Perennial Plant Pick of the Month

by Tyler Baird

COMMON NAME: Prairie Dropseed

BOTANICAL NAME: Sporobolus heterolepsis

USDA ZONE: 3-9

SUNLIGHT: Full sun

SOIL CONDITIONS: Dry to medium and tolerant of a wide range of soils.

HABIT: 2-3’x2-3’

FEATURES: Prairie dropseed is an adaptable prairie native that behaves well in both manicured and naturalized gardens. It has fine textured clumping/mounding foliage and sends up taller sprays of seed heads in summer. When in bloom it has a pungent scent that some people like more than others (I’m in the latter group but tolerate it because of all its other great features).

WHY WE LOVE IT: Form and texture are prairie dropseed’s best features. It is a reliable, easy to care for, and well-behaved plant that is fun to design with. As a native, it is adapted well to Iowa conditions and will grow well in almost any full-sun setting found in a residential yard. It also grows well in naturalized plantings where it cooperates with its neighbors and doesn’t spread quickly or act in the more aggressive ways of many other native grasses.
