INLA Joins Iowa Parks & Recreation Maintenance Rodeo

The Iowa Nursery and Landscape Association was excited to participate in the first-ever Iowa Parks and Recreation Association Maintenance Rodeo, held last month in Johnston.

This new event brought together parks and maintenance professionals from across the state for friendly competition, networking, and hands-on skill challenges. INLA was proud to be part of this inaugural effort to celebrate the hard work and expertise of those who keep Iowa’s parks and public spaces looking their best.

Perennial Plant Pick of the Month

by Tyler Baird

Eryngium yuccifolium

COMMON NAME: Rattlesnake Master

BOTANICAL NAME: Eryngium yuccifolium

USDA ZONE: 3-8

SUNLIGHT: Full sun

SOIL CONDITIONS: Dry to medium, well drained soils. Self-seeding, and it will move to optimal conditions in the garden as it becomes established.

HABIT: 5x3’

FEATURES: Rattlesnake master is a unique perennial native to prairies. The unique greenish-white blooms appear from June-September with seed heads persisting well into winter. The plant has basal rosettes with bristle edged sword-shaped leaves. The umbel form flowers/seed heads are held high above the basal rosettes and are the main ornamental feature.

WHY WE LOVE IT: Rattlesnake master catches the eye because it is unique. The blooms are attractive and have a whimsical charm and are packed with pollinators during peak bloom during the summer months. Rattlesnake master tends to move around the garden to its preferred cultural location and provides nice vertical accents scattered throughout a planting. While it tends to migrate, rattlesnake master is not aggressive and fits well into surrounding plant communities.

Annual Plant Pick of the Month

by Dylan Schrock

COMMON NAME: Sparkler White Cleome

BOTANICAL NAME: Cleome hassleriana ‘Sparkler White’

SUNLIGHT: Sun

HEIGHT: 24-36”

SPREAD: 36-44”

SOIL CONDITIONS: Average Soil

FEATURES: Heat and sun tolerant plants in a shorter and more controlled growth habit than traditional cleome

WHY WE LOVE IT: Fiesta Sparkler white cleome is one of several colors in the ‘sparkler’ series of cleome. The same free flowing upright annual as other varieties but this one stays at a more manageable height. A great backdrop for annual displays when used as a hedge but can also be the centerpiece statement plant of your best in ground and planter annual displays.
