Greetings Innovators!
This week, my journey—and ours together—into the heart of innovation takes a deeply personal and authentic turn. It all started with a musical moment that struck a chord with me and my team. As we brainstormed for this week's newsletter, The Real Thing by The Brothers Johnson filled the room. This song isn’t just any tune to me; the duo behind it are cousins of my mom, Martha Sanders.

It's about more than just standing out—it's about being remembered, respected, and recognized for your authentic contributions. This challenge is not just about personal marketing; it's a journey of self-discovery and intentional presentation.
Getting Started:
- Reflect: Begin with introspection. What are your unique strengths? What values do you stand for? How do you want to impact your industry or community?

The Civil Rights History Project | |
|
The Civil Rights History Project is a significant initiative aimed at documenting the stories and experiences of individuals who played a crucial role in the Civil Rights Movement. This project is a collaborative effort between the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). Here are some key details about the project:
Background and Legislation
-
Legislation: The project was authorized by Congress in 2009 through the Civil Rights History Project Act, which required the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian Institution to conduct a survey of existing oral history collections with relevance to the Civil Rights Movement and to record new interviews with people who participated in the Movement.
-
Implementation: The project officially began in 2010, with the aim of capturing firsthand accounts from as many participants in the Civil Rights Movement as possible.
Objectives and Scope
- Preservation of Histories: The primary objective is to preserve the stories of Civil Rights activists and leaders, many of whom had never before shared their experiences publicly.
- Comprehensive Collection: The project seeks to cover a wide range of perspectives, including well-known leaders, grassroots organizers, and individuals who contributed to the Movement in various capacities.
Methodology
-
Interviews: Professional oral historians and scholars conduct the interviews, which are recorded in high-quality video and audio formats.
-
Scope of Interviews: The interviews cover the interviewees' early life, involvement in the Civil Rights Movement, and reflections on the Movement's legacy and ongoing relevance.
Access and Usage
-
Public Access: The interviews are made available to the public through the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian Institution. They serve as a vital resource for researchers, educators, students, and the general public interested in the Civil Rights Movement.
-
Educational Resource: The collection is an invaluable educational tool, providing insights into the strategies, hardships, successes, and lessons of the Civil Rights Movement.
Impact
-
Historical Insight: The project provides profound insights into the Civil Rights Movement, adding depth and personal dimensions to the historical record.
-
Inspiration and Reflection: By preserving these oral histories, the project inspires current and future generations to reflect on the importance of civil rights and the ongoing struggle for equality and justice.
Notable Aspects
-
Diverse Narratives: The project includes narratives from across the spectrum of Civil Rights activism, including the fight against segregation, voting rights campaigns, and economic justice initiatives.
-
Partnerships: The project leverages partnerships with various organizations and institutions to identify interviewees and to disseminate the interviews widely.
