|
Indiana PTA is joining ICPE's Day of Action on President's Day, Monday 2/21 at 2:00 at the Indiana Statehouse.
Indiana PTA will be present at this event on Monday (tomorrow). We encourage you to join us at the Statehouse to make your voice heard! All the information you need to attend is available at these two links, including a printable flyer with information that may be helpful in planning your day.

ISTA has done an amazing job of "Packing the House" for the past two weeks. They have two more days of action planned this week, Tuesday and Wednesday, February 22 and 23.
THANK YOU to everyone who has taken time to attend these events and to contact their legislators. Your efforts are making a difference! We continue to encourage our members to attend in solidarity with ISTA and to encourage the union members in your schools to attend.

Follow These Steps to Protect Hoosier Kids!
TAKE ACTION NOW!
|
Our members are encouraged to take the following action ASAP as two of these bills are scheduled to be heard on MONDAY:
Contact Representative Robert Behning, Chair of the House Education Committee, and THANK HIM for not scheduling SB 17 (Material Harmful to Minors) to be heard in committee.
- Rep. Behning may be contacted at 800-382-9841 or via email at h91@iga.in.gov
Contact the House Education Committee members and ask them to OPPOSE SB 356 (adjunct teacher permits), which is scheduled to be heard in committee on Monday.
- Indiana PTA supports a well-monitored, strong certification program for those entering the teaching profession.
- Indiana PTA believes that all full-time teachers actively employed in our schools must be licensed teachers.
- This bill seeks to solve the teacher shortage by lowering the standards regarding the qualifications of adults placed to teach in Hoosier classrooms.
- An individual may have content knowledge in an area, but that does not mean that they have the proper training and skills needed to interact with and instruct students.
-
Please send an email now! The committee may be reached by copying and pasting the following email addresses into your message: h91@iga.in.gov, h17@iga.in.gov, h81@iga.in.gov, h28@iga.in.gov, h7@iga.in.gov, h29@iga.in.gov, h58@iga.in.gov, h32@iga.in.gov, h72@iga.in.gov, h14@iga.in.gov, h86@iga.in.gov, h27@iga.in.gov, h43@iga.in.gov
Contact your Senator and ask them to OPPOSE HB 1041 (Participation in School Sports). This bill, which seeks to ban transgender girls from participation in school sports, is scheduled for second reading in the Senate on Monday afternoon.
- PTA is committed to advocate for full inclusion for all students regardless of gender identity.
- PTA is committed to advocating for policies and protections for LGBTQ youth to make sure they have positive school experiences and the opportunity to reach their full potential.
- Title IX requires that schools and education institutions treat all individuals equally, regardless of their sex.
- Federal courts, the Department of Justice and the Department of Education have previously found that such bans violate the Equal Protections Clause of the US Constitution.
- Transgender sports bans are harmful to an at-risk population of youth, depriving an already vulnerable group of the benefit of participating in sports.
- According to data compiled by the Trevor Project, 85% of transgender and non-binary youth report that the constant political attacks on them have had a negative impact on their mental health.

Our members are encouraged to take the following action this week:
Contact the members of the Senate Education and Career Development Committee and ask them to OPPOSE HB 1134.
- While the amendments passed this week improve the bill, there are still many potential concerns.
- The current version of the bill prevents our school counselors from utilizing surveys from outside sources to identify students who may be in need of mental health services.
- The newly amended bill still allows for potentially weeks long delays between identifying students in need of mental health support and the implementation of those services.
- A new section of the bill, titled Dignity and Nondiscrimination in Education replaces the prior “eight tenets” language with essentially three tenets. These three tenets prohibit the promotion of the concept that any race, sex, ethnicity, religion, color or national origin is: 1. Inherently superior or inferior to another, 2. That any individual should be treated adversely or preferentially based on race, sex, etc.; or 3. That by virtue of sex, race, etc. that an individual is inherently responsible for the past actions committed by other members of the same group.
- With no definition provided for the word "promote," this leaves things open to interpretation by attorneys, judges and potentially juries.
- Teachers may still be prevented from providing students with honest educations that can help them learn from our country's past and create a better future. Will teachers still be able to use primary historical sources (which often include language that goes against these tenets) when they teach?
- Copy and paste the following addresses to contact the Senate Education and Career Development committee: Senator.Raatz@iga.in.gov, s24@iga.in.gov, Senator.Baldwin@iga.in.gov, Senator.Buchanan@iga.in.gov, Senator.Donato@iga.in.gov, Senator.Kruse@iga.in.gov, Senator.Leising@iga.in.gov, Senator.Rogers@iga.in.gov, Senator.Kyle.Walker@iga.in.gov, s29@iga.in.gov, s3@iga.in.gov, s30@iga.in.gov, s40@iga.in.gov
