A Special Edition of Chai Lines in Support of

The 80th Anniversary of Torah Fund

If you are viewing this on your smartphone,

consider a landscape orientation for easier viewing.

This special edition of Chai Lines comes to you on 08.08.2022. No matter how you read the date of 08.08 - August 8th or the 8th of August...

It is easy to see that 08 turned upside down is 80. That is why we have chosen today to celebrate Torah Fund’s 80th birthday and 80 years of supporting our future rabbis, cantors, scholars, and educators.

Turn that 8 on its side and it looks a lot like the symbol for infinity. Isn’t that the goal of Torah Fund – to ensure support in perpetuity for our students at the five institutions of high learning we support?

Our 2022-2023 Chazak v’Ematz Torah Fund Campaign supports scholarships and programming at The Jewish Theological Seminary in New YorkZiegler School of Rabbinic Studies in Los AngelesSchechter Institutes of Jewish Studies in JerusalemSeminario Rabinico Latinoamericano in Buenos Aires, and Zacharias Frankel College in Potsdam. You can help strengthen Jewish education and ensure the vibrancy of the Jewish people for decades to come, with your gift to Torah Fund.

Will you join the 80th birthday party? While all donors are being requested to go above and beyond their usual donations, we know that an additional $80 can be a big reach. So, let’s band together and show our support in whatever way we each can!

Of course, $80 would be great, but if not $80, will you make a donation of $8? Or $16? Or $32? Or $40? You get the idea. Give what you can, when you can. If our region’s donors give even an additional small amount, INR will be showing our support of Torah Fund’s 80th birthday.

A few final thoughts...

80 years ago the world was in the midst of World War II. Despite the grim times, the members of Women’s League for Conservative Judaism looked forward and started a fund to help the students at the Jewish Theological Seminary. In 1942, there was one school. Now, in 2022, there are five institutions of higher learning. The world today is, again, one filled with uncertainty, but we forge ahead, confident that we will sustain our students. Torah Fund is the dedicated tzedakah of Women’s League. Your support, large or small, is important as we show strength and courage, Chazak v’Ematz. Thank you for all you do to support the students.

Thank You, Merci, Todah Rabah!

Rita Wertlieb and Margie Miller, Co-Chairs of Torah Fund 80th Celebration, have some suggestions for celebrating 80 years of Torah Fund:

We ask every member of Women’s League to increase her level of giving by $80 during the 2022 - 2023 campaign year. We all know these are challenging times. The need is still great and constant at our five institutions of higher Jewish learning. The giving levels to receive your Torah fund pin have not changed for two decades. During this 80th anniversary, please, add to your donation so that we may continue to support future rabbis, cantors, educators and scholars for decades to come.

How to save for the extra $80? Some suggestions:

  • Affiliate craft project – create tzedakah boxes specifically for the 80th

anniversary to collect your money toward your plus $80 donation.

  • After you light your candles each night of Chanukah, put $10 in your tzedakah box. At the end of the holiday, you’ll be able to give your $80 gift to Torah Fund.
  • Put $10 in your tzedakah box for each day of Pesach.
  • Over the next 80 weeks, put $1 in your tzedakah box before you light your Shabbat candles.
  • Collect $1 from 80 affiliate/sisterhood members and gift $80 from your affiliate.
  • Put $0.80 in your tzedakah box for 100 days, then donate the $80 you’ve saved.
  • Put $0.25 in your tzedakah box for 320 days, then donate the $80 you’ve saved.

Let’s start together with our Plus 80 for 80 Year campaign and honor this amazing milestone.

Thank You!

And - As we talk about perpetual support, please think about joining the Torah Fund Legacy Society....
