In June of 2009, my wife and I returned from our six-year secularly funded mission trip to Germany.   I was rehired at the Sarpy Creek Coal mine in Hardin, Montana, where I had worked before going to Germany.  Upon returning, we attended the Hardin Open Bible Church.  A couple of Sundays had passed when the Pastor asked me if I would be willing to fill in for the Adult Sunday School teacher for the following Sunday. I said yes!  Evidently, one parishioner told him I had been teaching this class before leaving for Germany.  After he heard me teach, he approached me about becoming an INSTE Group Leader.   I told them I did not know anything about INSTE and would research it. 

About one month later, he handed me this white binder and the four Level 1 books, stressing again that this was what I was called to do. I started going over the material slowly.  Finally, I went through the facilitator’s training book, took the test, and sent all of the paperwork, thinking it would be a miracle if INSTE accepted me as a facilitator.  Lo and behold, to my surprise, INSTE had indeed accepted me to be a student facilitator.  At the beginning of January 2010, I started my journey with INSTE Level 1. Two years later, my wife and I finished Level 1.  Then, there was a break of two years while waiting for some Level 2 students. We started Level 2 in Fall 2014 with an in-person class setting. Also, around this time, I started Level 1 Online courses. I finished all 24 of the Level 2 books in Fall 2020, along with a couple of other online students.

Once I started studying and allowing the Holy Spirit to work with and in me. I noticed that the more I studied God’s Word, the less I knew. However, the real drawing point for me was the global theme of INSTE, which is that “doing” must flow from “being.” That, to me, is discipleship 101, and it became a paradigm shift for me. To the point of coining the phrases “head knowledge” versus “heart knowledge,” which correspond to some more buzz words “character” and “conduct.”  The preverbal light bulb came on, and I realized that INSTE focused on transformation rather than academia, as Drs. Nicholas and Leona Venditti state it beautifully: we need not only to be masters of God’s Word but, more importantly, let God’s Word master us. Transformation into the image of Christ has all to do with “heart knowledge,” resulting in changes in our “character” and “conduct.”  

It was an easy transformation for me to move online when I started online courses. I started letting my wife take the Level 1 courses in the classroom setting. By this time, INSTE had approved me also to be a student facilitator for Level 2.  I started getting connected with other students who, like me, were isolated from formal universities or colleges. INSTE online became a platform to fulfill the Great Commission to make disciples who make disciples, which is a command for all the disciples of Christ.

Les dije que no sabía nada sobre INSTE y que lo investigaría.

Aproximadamente un mes después, me entregó esta carpeta blanca y los cuatro libros de Nivel 1, insistiendo una vez más en que esto era lo que estaba llamado a hacer. Empecé a repasar el material lentamente. Finalmente, revisé el manual de capacitación para facilitadores, hice el examen y envié toda la documentación, pensando que sería un milagro si INSTE me aceptaba como facilitador. Para mi sorpresa, INSTE me había aceptado como facilitador estudiantil. A principios de enero de 2010, comencé mi camino con INSTE Nivel 1. Dos años después, mi esposa y yo terminamos el Nivel 1. Después, tuvimos un descanso de dos años mientras esperábamos a algunos estudiantes de Nivel 2. Empezamos el Nivel 2 en otoño de 2014 con clases presenciales. Además, por esa época, comencé los cursos en línea de Nivel 1. Terminé los 24 manuales de Nivel 2 en otoño de 2020, junto con un par de estudiantes en línea.

Una vez que comencé a estudiar y a permitir que el Espíritu Santo obrara conmigo y en mí, noté que cuanto más estudiaba la Palabra de Dios, menos sabía. Sin embargo, el verdadero punto de atracción para mí fue el tema global de INSTE: que el "hacer" debe fluir del "ser". Para mí, eso es el discipulado básico, y se convirtió en un cambio de paradigma. Hasta el punto de acuñar las frases "conocimiento intelectual" versus "conocimiento del corazón", que corresponden a palabras de moda como "carácter" y "conducta". Se me encendió la bombilla preverbal y me di cuenta de que INSTE se centraba en la transformación más que en la academia, como lo expresan bellamente los Dres. Nicholas y Lena Venditti: no solo necesitamos ser maestros de la Palabra de Dios, sino, aún más importante, dejar que la Palabra de Dios nos domine. La transformación a la imagen de Cristo tiene que ver con el "conocimiento del corazón", lo que resulta en cambios en nuestro "carácter" y "conducta".

Para mí, migrar a la modalidad virtual fue una transformación sencilla. Empecé a dejar que mi esposa tomara los cursos de Nivel 1 en el aula. Para entonces, INSTE también me había aprobado como facilitador estudiantil de Nivel 2. Empecé a conectar con otros estudiantes que, como yo, estaban aislados de las universidades formales. INSTE en línea se convirtió en una plataforma para cumplir la Gran Comisión de hacer discípulos que hagan discípulos, un mandato para todos los discípulos de Cristo.
