In 2020, Gilead Sciences, INC. provided Build Up SMC with a $50,000 grant to increase access to child care in San Mateo County. This investment into the community came at a critical time, offering hope to small business owners during the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic. Even while facing the challenges of COVID-19, Build Up SMC's first-ever grant program supported the successful expansion of 22 new early care and learning spaces!

A recent survey from the Federal Reserve Board revealed that more than 1 in 5 (22%) of all parents surveyed were either not working or were working less because of a lack of childcare or disruptions to in-person schooling.
Those whose work was affected by such disruptions were disproportionately women, particularly women of color.
