Dear Friends and Neighbors,
 
I proudly invite you to attend a street co-naming ceremony to honor, celebrate and commemorate the Dominican Republic Independence Day, 27 de Febrero.
 
February 27 is an emblematic date for more than 1 million of New Yorkers of Dominican descent.
 
Dominicans first arrived in the United States in 1613, with the arrival of Juan Rodriguez, who also was the very first immigrant, to New York City. At the turn of the 20th century, 5 thousand Dominicans arrived in New York City through Ellis Island. Until the 1960s, approximately 12 thousand Dominicans lived in the entire United States. Today, there are over 2 million Dominicans in the country and more than 1 million live in New York! Dominicans are now the largest emigrating group in New York City and represent approximately 30 percent of the entire Latino population in the City.
 
Dominicans are now part of every aspect of the socioeconomic and cultural fabric of New York City. As the largest migrating population, Dominicans have changed and influenced the New York City socio-cultural landscape in many important ways. Whether is through music, literature, cuisine, fashion and design, film/stage/television, education, government/politics, or sports, Dominicans occupy many spaces and contribute in multiple ways to the cultural, political and economic vibrancy of New York.
 
With the renaming of this intersection, we celebrate the history and trajectory of Dominicans in New York City and seek that New Yorkers of Dominican descent see themselves represented, their influence reflected on their streets, and their ties to the City strengthened.
 
Please join us and our Latino brothers and sisters in honoring the Dominican Independence Day for generations to come.

Es un honor invitarlos a la ceremonia de co-nombramiento de calle para honrar, celebrar y conmemorar el Día de la Independencia de la República Dominicana, 27 de febrero.
 
El 27 de febrero es una fecha emblemática para más 1 millón de neoyorquinos de ascendencia dominicana.
 
Los dominicanos llegaron por primera vez a los Estados Unidos en el 1613, con el arribo de Juan Rodríguez, quien también fue el primer inmigrante, a la ciudad de Nueva York. A principios del siglo XX, 5 mil dominicanos llegaron a la ciudad de Nueva York a través de la isla Ellis. Hasta la década de los 1960s, aproximadamente 12 mil dominicanos vivían en todo los Estados Unidos. ¡Hoy, hay más de 2 millones de dominicanos en el país y más de 1 millón de estos viven en Nueva York! Los dominicanos son ahora el grupo emigrante más grande de la ciudad de Nueva York, con más de 740 mil dominicanos y representan aproximadamente el 30 por ciento de toda la población latina en la ciudad.
 
Los dominicanos forman parte de todos los aspectos del tejido socioeconómico y cultural de la ciudad de Nueva York. Representando la población emigrante más populosa, los dominicanos han cambiado e influenciado el paisaje sociocultural de la ciudad de Nueva York en muchos aspectos significativos. Ya sea a través de la música, la literatura, la cocina, la moda y el diseño, el cine / el escenario / la televisión, la educación, el gobierno / la política o los deportes, los dominicanos ocupan muchos espacios y contribuyen de múltiples maneras a la vitalidad cultural, política y económica de Nueva York.
 
Con el cambio de nombre de esta intersección, celebramos la historia y la trayectoria de los dominicanos en la ciudad de Nueva York y buscamos que los neoyorquinos de ascendencia dominicana se vean representados, su influencia reflejada en sus calles, y sus lazos con la ciudad fortalecidos.
