Big Change Coming to Food Packaging in Virginia!

Starting July 1, 2025, large chain restaurants (with 20+ locations in Virginia) can no longer use Styrofoam (EPS foam) containers. By July 1, 2026, all food vendors — including small restaurants, food trucks, and salad bars — must make the switch too.

These single-use foam containers are being phased out because they are harmful to our health, our communities, and our environment. This statewide push will help cut down on litter, protect wildlife, and use more eco-friendly options like paper, plant-based, or reusable containers.

Tip for business owners: Turn this into a positive! Let your customers know you're going green. Share your switch to compostable, biodegradable, and reusable products — it’s a great way to show you care about the environment and your community! You can also encourage patrons to BYO-to-go and reduce waste.

Not in food service? You’re still encouraged to make the switch! Any business currently using EPS should explore better packaging solutions.

Note: Some local exemptions may be available for businesses in financial hardship, but those who don’t follow the rules could face a $50/day fine.
