COMMUNITY FORUM:
ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY CHILDCARE

Childcare isn't just a family issue — it's an

economic development issue in Virginia.

Virginia data shows:

• Most families cannot afford the true cost of childcare, especially for infants.

• A shortage of licensed childcare slots limits parents' ability to work, advance, or accept new jobs.

• Employers across the Commonwealth report childcare challenges are hurting hiring, retention, and productivity.

• Strengthening childcare access supports a stronger workforce and a healthier economy.

That's why Minus 9 to 5 is bringing parents and the community together for an open, honest conversation about childcare and what our families and economy need to move forward.

Minus 9 to 5 is a collective impact initiative at Virginia Health Sciences at ODU, working with families and community partners to strengthen the system of support for children from the prenatal stage through age five. They also lead Ready Region Southeastern, part of a statewide network improving early childhood care and education through Virginia’s Quality Birth to 5 (VQB5) system.
