Two New Workforce Programs | | |
Isle Maritime Trades Academy
(Smithfield)
On September 24th, Governor Glenn Youngkin joined representatives from Camp Community College, Isle of Wight County Schools, and HII–Newport News Shipbuilding to celebrate the opening of the Isle Maritime Trades Academy (IMTA) at Camp’s Center in Smithfield. This innovative program, designed for 11th and 12th grade students, provides a two-year pathway that combines education with hands-on training and career opportunities in the maritime industry.
Chancellor David Doré of the Virginia Community College System, Dr. Corey McCray of Camp Community College, Virginia Secretary of Education Aimee Guidera, and Dr. Theo Cramer, Isle of Wight Schools Superintendent, among others, participated in the event. The excitement from the inaugural cohort of students was inspiring, as this program opens doors to rewarding careers in trades that are vital to the Hampton Roads region.

Workforce Trades & Innovation Center (Suffolk)
On September 25th, Camp Community College held a ribbon cutting to celebrate the unveiling of Phase One of its Workforce Trades & Innovation Center (WTIC) in Suffolk. What was once a 10,000-square-foot supermarket was transformed into a one-stop-shop for trades training, offering programs such as electrical, pipe fitting, welding, HVAC, shipfitting, maritime coatings, sheet metal, and more.
Classes began October 6th, and plans are already underway for Phase Two, a 6,000-square-foot expansion that will add classrooms and offices. This project came to fruition through the support of key partners, including Coastal Virginia Developers, BlueForge Alliance, and the Blocker Foundation.
