In October 2020, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) finalized their policy on Data Management and Retention. The policy will go into effect 1/25/ 23, at which time any NIH-funded research that generates scientific data will need a prospective Data Management and Sharing (DMS) plan outlining how data will be preserved and shared. Surveys indicate the vast majority of research participants support data sharing with university scientist and many express confidence in deidentification (New England Journal of Medicine, Mello, et. al., June 2018).
