IRCC Women's Golf Association (WGA) Invitational

The IRCC Women's Golf Association (WGA) Invitational Golf Tournament on April 4th was themed "Ye Olde Golf Course." After registration and breakfast, 75 ladies enjoyed a shotgun start: 25 IRCC members and 50 guests! After their round, the golfers returned to the At Ease Club for lunch. They enjoyed Scottish music by Dave Hutton Yuke and the Colleens (Irish ladies), along with awards and raffle prizes.

The overall low gross went to Pamela Nalley, Mary Laverty, Lynne Anderson, and Carol Votto with a score of 161. While the overall low net went to Gail Smith, Kerry Petersen, Lori Abbott, and Jeannie Brien with a 122. Eight additional winners received payouts. The raffle prizes included gift baskets and donated items from local businesses and the IRCC Pro shop.

Military BRATs Luncheon

April is the month of the Military Child and IRCC held its first ever luncheon to recognize BRAT residents. There's some discussion about the origin of the term, but 20 resident BRATs attended, each marking where they were born and lived on maps. Many shared stories of their upbringing and travels as children of military members. Traditional Command/Squadron picnic foods were served, BRAT bingo was played and BRAT-oriented videos were shared. Lots of laughs ensued as well as great discussions by those who also served and those who raised BRATs of their own.

Military Brats Day is coming up at the end of the month!

RN Luncheon

A second luncheon honoring IRCC RNs was held Thursday, 13 April with 40 in attendance. Coordinator Annie Dalter opened the program with welcoming remarks stating the purpose of this event is for IRCC nurses to network, share our stories and to celebrate our collective achievements across various multi-disciplinary experiences.

Dee Moskowitz, RN, Col, US Army Nurse Corps (Ret) was honored as “Nurse in the Spotlight”. Dee joined the US Army Nurse Corps in 1968, served in Vietnam with the 18th surgical hospital which is a mobile transport unit. She retired in 1994 after 26 years of service. She and her husband moved to IRCC in 2004 whereby she participated in many activities and served on numerous committees, including membership on the Board of Directors.

Following networking and lunch, Kay Garner, MS. Ed, Psychology, presented a discussion on self-care, “You deserve care too.” Kay emphasized effective caregiving to others including loved ones requires preparation with information and education. It also requires taking a self-inventory, accepting our strengths and limitations. Caregivers also need to acknowledge changes in relationships, identify a strong support system, and find ways to reduce stress. And foremost, Avoid Guilt!

A Fall Event will be planned in October or early November, Annie Dalter will take the lead to coordinate and will enlist volunteers to help bring another successful event!

Florida's Space Coast - Great American Defense Communities

Did you know that the Space Coast is one of just five recently named Great American Defense Communities for 2022? According to the April 6 press release from Washington, D.C. –

Florida’s Space Coast, home to Patrick Space Force Base and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, is one of five communities across the country named to the 2022 Class of Great American Defense Communities.

The Association of Defense Communities (ADC) announced the five selected communities in conjunction with USAA, the program’s official sponsor at the Defense Communities National Summit earlier this month. The 2022 class also includes West Valley Partners, Ariz., Tullahoma, Tenn., Antelope Valley, Calif., and Northern Virginia.

“Our military needs America’s defense communities to support them,” ADC President Bob Ross said. “We selected Florida’s Space Coast because they are a region that consistently goes above and beyond to support service members, veterans, and military families living in their community.”
