IREM's Commitment to Diversity
|
It’s our recognition that everyone in the real estate management profession has a voice and there is a need to honor the diversity of our community. It’s our promise to provide value that makes a difference in the lives of all stakeholders. In July 2021, IREM established a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) strategy and roadmap to provide IREM with an overall direction and DEI vision that supports the IREM brand.
Our vision is a commitment to fostering a welcoming environment that continues to embrace equity, inclusion, and diversity. We will be better tomorrow than we are today.

IREM DC Member Spotlight
Byrdy Kelley, CPM, ARM
IREM DC: Byrdy, tell me a little bit about what inspired you to start your own company?
Byrdy: I have always had a burning desire to follow my father and brother’s entrepreneur footsteps. Around 2011, I began strategizing about starting my property management firm to enhance the quality of service for affordable apartment communities and promote career growth for minorities in the property management industry. During the pandemic, I developed the courage to take the risk and start Melan Property Management. Through all of the ups and downs, I’m enjoying the journey.
IREM DC: Explain what your company does and what services they provide.
Byrdy: Melan Property Management provides property management and facility management services for single-family residential, multifamily, and commercial real estate assets. We are a woman minority-owned property management firm headquartered in North Bethesda, MD. We serve the DMV, Georgia, Florida, Texas, and California markets.
IREM DC: Where do you project Melan Property Management to be in 5 to 10 years?
Byrdy: In 5 years, I would like Melan to manage two thousand single-family/multifamily units and five thousand square feet of commercial office space across the country. In 10 years, I would like to double these projections.
|
|
IREM DC: What is the most challenging issue facing real estate management companies today?
Byrdy: The most challenging issue real estate management companies face today is the ever-changing government COVID-19 restrictions. Management companies have experienced an unprecedented number of changes that have had a social, and economic impact on our people and clients.
IREM DC: What sets Melan apart from the other property management firms?
Byrdy: Melan’s company values are embedded in our organizational culture. Our vision is to sustain viability in all we do by incorporating authenticity, collaboration, clarity, unity, relationships, and inclusion. We don’t just exist to manage properties; we exist to strategically bring culture and community to life in every property we manage. We strive to meet and exceed our clients’ financial goals. Together, our team achieves viable sustainability socially, economically, and environmentally in all we do and every property we manage.
