DIAMOND JUBILEE NEWS
MLC LEGACY PROJECT
On average, our fiction collection in the Mustangs Learning Commons is 34 years old and only represents 3.5% of our borrowing. Time for some updates!!! If we want our students to love reading, we have to have titles that appeal to them. WHY DO WE WANT NEWER BOOKS?
Consider these examples, one was last published in 2012, the other in 1980. I'll let you guess which is which. I know we are not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but whom are we kidding? We all do, and especially when we are new readers, the look and feel of the book are prime motivators.
In a similar way, the format, font, and even the colour of the pages have changed a lot in recent years, and our senses like to view the more modern settings. A new reader may be put off by the look of a book before they even give the story a chance.

GRADE 8 TIPS
Exams are scheduled for all grades from January 25th to 28th. For most Grade 8s, this will be your first time writing an exam. Don’t panic!!! If you’ve been keeping up with your schoolwork, studying for your tests, and asking your teachers for extra help if you don’t understand something, you’re in good shape! If you haven’t been doing these things, now is the time to get prepared for your exams. The midterm exams for Grade 8s will cover the material learned from September to January. Your teachers will most likely give you an overview of what to expect so that you can study effectively. Make sure to prepare in advance for your midterms and not wait until the weekend before. The exam week runs on a different schedule than a regular school week in that you can leave when you are finished writing your exams for each day. You do not need to stay at the school until 3:05. There will be more information about the exam schedule in the coming weeks. For now, just make sure your notes are organized, you have your tests to review, and you’ve talked to your teachers about any challenging concepts. Success comes from preparation!!

STRETCHING WITH COOP
The Learning Commons is a place where learning comes full circle. During some student's ULTs, there may come a time for a much-needed stretch. How great to have students like Cooper volunteer to guide in a short breakout stretch session.
